magic and small hands

Postby midge25 » May 2nd, '03, 09:36

does anyone have any tips for people with small hands, i am just trying to learn some coin magic etc and would appreciate any tips.

i have been doing card magic for about 15 years now and when palming a card my hand is just big enough to cover the card just to give you an idea of the sixze of my hands

I would say that if you can palm a poker card your hands should be big enough for anything you need to do. There is a thread from the old forum on the subject if I recall correctly, where a few of us gave some advice to a small handed person on how to palm a large card. If you do a suitable search you are bound to find it.

There are lots of different methods of palming cards.
If you're technique is correct (i.e. grip the card with pinky tip and base of thumb, keeping hand in natural relaxed pose) it is quite possible to conceal a card even in a childs hands. I tought my nephew to palm and backpalm one summer's afternoon, and he even fooled me.

Lateral palming is also a favourite of mine, although it is not quite as angle-proof.

Small hands are not really a factor, think of Jay Sankey's hands. His hands are barely big enough to conceal a poker card out flat, but in basic palm, the card is effectively shrunken, to an extent, by it's curvature.

The best advice here is check yourself in a mirror. Palming feels awkward and looks odd from a performer's perspective, but from the audience point of view it can be unexpectedly deceptive.

Try it!

Two of a closeup (or stage, for that matter) magicians best tools are a video camera and a mirror-box. Only then can you hone your technique. Sometimes, you can make hard work for yourself, when really, you could have been doing fine all along.

i think there is a psycological slant to palming as well, because we know and can see what is really happening, we think other people can too

That's a shock... palming cards was one of the first things I remember doing in magic! I thought everyone started there...

Well, if you can get round it!

I find sticking a needle through my stomach and feeding four inches of thread behind it, but I'm going to stick at it so I can look like Blaine... !!!

Oh well!

 im with you andy

i hate palming cards, i like self working tricks like scotch and soda and stripper decks (i hear purists spinning in thier graves as i write).

i dont need to be able to DL to do good magic a haunted key does me just fine.

i use ghost tubes and die boxes, mechanical silk devices and change bags in my shows and never think about palming or body loading.

don't get me wrong iv'e paid my dues in my day you had no choise i can palm change, but prefer to use a shell or flipper coin, why keep a dog and bark yourself.
