Dave Bonsall's Sugar Routine Lecture Notes

The Effect

(Taken from the website)

This is one of Dave Bonsall’s favourite routines, used in all his performances. The routine won the Magicseen Magazine Masterclass Award 2011, as voted by the readers. The effect is as follows:

The magician produces a sachet of sugar, tears the end off, and pours it onto a card. He then asks a spectator for a banknote. He rolls the banknote into a cone shape, pours the sugar into it, opens the banknote and the sugar has vanished, he then rolls it back up and the sugar is poured out.

He then asks a spectator to hold their hand out to catch any sugar that may fall out, he forms a fist with his hand placing it on the spectator’s open hand and pours the sugar into his fist. He asks the spectator to squeeze his hand and tell him if they feel anything. The spectator says they do, they both open their hands and the sugar has transformed to a sugar lump, in the spectators hand.

The magician then puts the sugar lump back into his hand, the spectator squeezes the hand again and the sugar lump transforms back to sugar.

The magician then asks the spectator to tear up the empty sugar sachet into small pieces. The magician separates the two end pieces of the sachet and pours the sugar and the middle pieces into his hand. He asks the spectator to choose one of the remaining two end pieces. The magician then places that piece into his hand and restores the sugar, back into the sealed sachet, except for the remaining piece, which is found to match the restored sachet perfectly.

Review

As i am performing close-up again i was looking for some nice routines to go with my card effects and i was told about this. What you get a is a 5 page PDF of the effect that Dave has been using for over ten years. The actual routine is a lovely simple piece that is easy to perform and this will get very good reactions. This is ideal for table work and i shall be using this at corporate events and weddings.

There really is nothing challenging here and i really cannot see people struggling too long to learn this piece of magic. You do need a few things for this effect, if you do not have them then you can get them from Dave or elsewhere, there is nothing very expensive to purchase. The PDF has several clear pictures and the routine is very well explained. You do not receive a performance script with it, but to be honest you will know what you need to say when you perform this anyway.

I really like this and i shall be using this in my own repertoire. A very nice commercial, fun and easy piece of magic that will amaze.

Overall

9/10
