Magic Circle Awards 2012

Postby Mandrake » Oct 14th, '12, 21:35

My son and I had a great time at the awards on Saturday, champagne, canapés, close up magic and, apart from the awards, some great stage magic including Paul Daniels topping the bill.

The awards this year were:

The Maskelyne Award: Given for services to British magic - Derren Brown.

The Carlton Award: Presented to a performer for outstanding comedy in magic - Paul Daniels.

The David Devant Award: Given to those who have made a significant contribution in advancing the art of magic or who have given outstanding service to magic internationally. Winner - Jim Steinmeyer who accepted by video.

The John Nevil Maskelyne Prize: Given to the winner for noteworthy contributions to the art or literature of magic - Andi Gladwin

The Cecil Lyle Award: Given to the author of the best trick published in The Magic Circular: - Walford Taylor who accepted via his son.

The Hoffmann Memorial Lecture: Awarded to ‘encourage research into subjects related to the history, theory and practice of magic’ - David Fung

Silver Wand was awarded to Mike O'Brien for outstanding service to The Magic Circle and specifically for 50 Years of participation in Meet the Magic Circle.

Other awards were Honorary memberships and one went to Bob Loomis, not a magician but the Librarian and who just happened to be sitting next to us. Like all the other recipients, he genuinely had no clue that he was to be given any award. Fred Van Buren received recognition for his years of magic and several other worthies received due accolades – which meant lots of impromptu acceptance speeches which meant the show ran over quite a bit.

There was no shortage of champers, in the Devant room Fay Presto did the close up magic before the show and during the interval, a consummate professional who entertained the oldies and the youngsters equally skilfully.

Richard Pinner compered the show and Paul Daniels toped the bill with the luverly Debbie McGee joining in with her Gypsy Thread routine. Paul did Chop Cup, Borrowed currency note in walnut, in egg, in lemon and also a rather super signed newspaper tear and restore – I know it was good ‘cos I signed the newspaper and I have it as a souvenir!

There’s a lot of public events going on at the Magic Circle HQ, well worth subscribing for their forthcoming events emails!

Must admit Mandrake, the magic circle in London is a amazing place, especially when you first venture up those circular spiral staircases. Its when you reach the top the whole place comes alive. Sadly never became a member, but have no regrets. Howether only just recently my 18 year old son passed his exams, and now is a full member. So have had the opportunity to visit on a few occasions. Anyway after living in London most of my life I decided to move away back in February, to Derbyshire so the journey is a bit far now if I was to join... Not as I would stand a chance anyway!!

The memberships vary and become cheaper the further away from the HQ you live which reflect this geographical situation. For me as a non member spec, and for or a special event of this kind, travelling off peak (plus my Old F@rts 1/3rd Discount rail pass!) means it's OK to do a once or twice a year. Certainly it's cheaper than doing the same trip for a West End show!

The mood at the MC seems to be changing, there are a lot more public events, Monday morning tours of the place are well supported and often sold out weeks ahead. Of course, some areas are off limits to non members but there's still enough there to see and admire. I was chuffed to see the display case containing items from David Nixon included a book which I bought a year or two back - for 10p at a car boot sale! Corportate events and even weddings take place there so they've realised that a society with secrets doesn't have to be secretive all the time.

There was a young lad, 13 or 14 I believe, performing at the Awards show, he has the rather unusual name of Fletcher Ransberry and. although his stuff wasn't cutting edge or particularly new to magicians, the way he presented it shows he's on his way to big things in the future. A very likeable personality mixed with skill and a good dash of superb comic timing - I'm sure his name will be one we'll be talking about in the future.

Wow!! Just slightly remember watching the David Nixon magic show in the early 70s... Think was just before Tommy cooper ruled the television with his shows... I also do remember him being a nice gent indeed.. As for the circle they do seem to be more non-secretive than they were 20 years ago now, I suppose its because the exposure of magic is everywhere.. Your right about the youngsters of today they are very skillful and knowledgeable than ever... As mentioned in my last post, my son was also a member of the young magicians at the circle, were he eventually went on too full membership... But he did tell me the exam was very demanding and difficult at times, but well worth the effect.. Question mandrake. What is your thoughts on the magic castle in America? Would you like to visit? I would love to one day.. Garry 8)

Given the opportunity I'd certainly love to visit, see a show, do the tours or whatever they have over there. There's a few oold posts on here at sutra42308.php and sutra415585.php where I mentioned a museum/house tour in Spain, the home of a guy called Xevi who is the top magician in Spain - that's well worth visiting if he still does them!
