Calling all Fathers...

Postby Lawrence » Dec 11th, '12, 09:05

(And possibly mothers too, but maybe more of a dad thing)

As some of you may know I'm soon to be a father (4&1/2 weeks and counting).
This week I find myself in a bit of a situation as I've been advised I'm not actually elligible for any statutory paternity pay (SPP). Now, I realise this does fall into the realm of "being my own fault" for thinking I would get SPP but [evidently] not having read the T&Cs thoroughly enough!

As the company has no paternity leave policy I have 2 options: take leave as unpaid, or have it come off my annual leave allowance.

So, to the father's out there (or anyone in the know); are there any other alternatives for financial support for fathers not elligible for SPP?

Funnily enough, I believe your local job centre may be able to provide some assistance in this matter my friend, you may be entitled to the payments from them, or alternatively you may get some entitlement from your good lady wife's employer, I know the council used to do it when I did a boring normal job.

Give the local job centre a ring they'll point you in the right direction!

Much love

I cant add much more than Aza. But I was in a similar boat and had to take AL. I really struggled the first year and ended up using unpaid leave eventually. I hope you get some assistance

I thought if you've worked for an employer for 26 weeks without a break then you're entitled. They may be acting illegally?? I'd trawl the government websites and pop into the local CAB. Calling the benefits office is well worth a punt as already mentioned. It's so bloody annoying this kind of thing. It makes me want to dress up as Batman and punch Cameron in the face!!!

Everyone here, including myself, our accountant and our financial controller all thought the same thing. But after carefully rereading forms 3 or 4 times it states 26 weeks prior to 15 weeks prior to the expected due date. Effectively it says you must've been working for the company when your lady got pregnant.
Turns out I'm 4 weeks shy of the elligibility period.

So.... anyone want to buy some decks of cards?
