Silver Swindle by Dave Forrest and Vanishing Inc.

This is an update of Gerti - which is discussed here:

Price: £20 (plus P&P) - may be cheaper elsewhere.

They say:
You'll always know which hand the signed coin is in and, despite being allowed to examine the coins, your audience will never know how!

This is Silver Swindle! Your participant chooses any one of two identical coins and signs it. You then turn your back and they put one of the coins in your hand. The other, they hide behind their own back. Despite the incredibly fair conditions, you always know without fail who holds the signed coin!

An incredibly clever and ingenious gaff coin (included) created by Romanos combined with a complete, professional, three-phase routine by Dave Forrest that steadily builds to its impossible climax make this one of the best carry everywhere miracles of all time!

No peeks
No marks
No magnets
No stooges
No electronics
No chemicals

With the thorough DVD instruction, custom laser-cut gaff coin and Dave's killer, pro routine, you'll be ready to blow minds within an hour of opening the package.

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

1. Easy to do.

I say:

OK, I must admit that I found all this a bit baffling. The second I saw video of this effect I thought, "Well, it's obviously *****." The method seemed so clear to me I couldn't believe all these magicians were saying that they were baffled - and all the people of other magic sites were wrongly guessing how it might be done. That's not to say I thought the method was *bad*; just that it was, I thought, instantly obvious. I bought it at LADs on Sunday anyway, as I thought it'd be a nice little thing to carry around (carry everywhere, always ready, takes up no pocket space, NOT CARDS). It also fits in with my style (I can say they're marking money because money has that innate sense of value, and they can 'sign' the coin with the name of a loved one/pet/pentacle/whatever - something that also has personal meaning, then I'm being all psychological, right?). The gaff coin - I got the 10p version - is fine. As far as I'm aware Silver Swindle is just Gerti, but with Dave Forrest's three phrase routine. But... ah... Phrase 3 of Forrest's routine is *genius*. With a bit of luck, this phase *would* fool a magician, let alone a lay person. It's just lovely thinking. Also, you won't understand this until you get the DVD with Silver Swindle because it's not apparent in the video demo Forrest has released - which, because of the massive fairness in doing it like that and so avoiding any chance of misleading the viewer, massive props to him.

I'm aware that the last two things I've posted big up Dave Forrest. Let me say that, though to be sure I generally like Forrest's stuff, I'm in no way connected to/secretly in love with him. In fact, I ordered some magnets from him ages ago and (an oversight, I'm sure) he never sent them, so I am Forrest Neutral in impartiality terms.

Overall

As an item: 6 to 7/10. The gimmick is fine.
With Forrest's routine (esp. Phase 3): 8 to 9/10. This, for me, takes it from 'Something to have on me always, just in case I'm asked to do something'; an At Least I Can Do That back-up, if you like, into an effect I'd really want to perform whenever I get the chance.

Gerti is currently sitting in my magic drawer, would you recommend buying 2.0, getting a second gimmick just to get the routine?

In fact, I've heard it said that the Silver Swindle coin is gimmicked better than the Gerti one - it's more subtle. So, technically, I suppose it's not simply Forrest's routine. However - and this is entirely personal - I wouldn't buy Silver Swindle just for the routine if I'd got Gerti already. Suppose you could get it for only £15... well, though the thinking of the 3rd Phase is lovely, £15 is still a lot to pay for adding even a lovely phase to something you already have, right? You could buy an entire DVD of routines for that.
