Mandrake wrote:At the end of November I'm sure it was mentioned that Derren's 'An Evening of Wonders' would be broadcast on Channel 4 Friday January 2nd at 9pm. It seems to have been changed in favour of the (yukk!) Celebrity Big Brother Launch and Derren's Show is now refered to on Magicweek as being on 'in January 2009'.

Bummer, I was looking forward to seeing it this Friday night  !

Apparently, it will now be aired on 13th Jan, 10pm, C4 according to Derren's blog.

I believe Craig Browning has mentioned this a while back but there’s a new series called The Mentalist starting on UK on Channel 5 next Thursday March 26th, 9.00PM.

The blurb in one TV listing mag is:
New US drama series staring Simon Baker as Patrick Jane, a Derren Brown-type character and former celebrity psychic who’s now working alongside the California Bureau of Investigation.
Not sure what Derren would say to this but I’m quite sure he’s never claimed to be Psychic, in fact quite the opposite!

Then blurb goes on to say,
He’s also not averse to using underhanded tactics to catch California’s killers – be that magic tricks, sleight of hand or hypnosis – which means he has to be bailed out of some dangerous situations.
Sleight of hand has always been very risky y'know.....

Judgement reserved for the time being but from that write-up I think I’d rather have some re-runs of Bill Bixby as The Magician…..

On Deception

Postby Mandrake » May 27th, '09, 09:17

Amazon are open for pre orders on:

On Deception by Harry Houdini (Author), and Derren Brown (Author) £5.99

Product Description
Throughout his life, the world's most famous escapologist strove to expose the methods and tricks of illusionists and sham spiritualists. Studying entertainers and criminals alike, Houdini investigates the tricks of the mind and sleights of hand that have deceived people throughout history. The magician's writings caused a public sensation; legend has it that The Right Way to do Wrong was bought in bulk by burglars in an attempt to guard the tricks of their trade. This collection also includes Houdini's revelations about the methods behind some of his own most famous tricks, and articles he wrote to expose his imitators, demonstrating him to be unarguably the master of his craft.

About the Author

Harry Houdini (1874-1926) was a magician, escapologist and performer of stunts, as well as a sceptic and investigator of spiritualists. He produced films, acted, and penned numerous books. Derren Brown is a well-known English magician, mentalist, and psychological illusionist.

Derren Brown: The Gathering (Rpt)
10.45pm on Wednesday 9th September (1 hour 10 minutes) on Channel 4.
Prepare for plenty of Derren Brown's brand of magic and mind games in this specially-made recording of a live show shot in a mystery location in front of an invited audience of magic experts and celebrity fans. This one-hour fusion of magic, suggestion, psychology and misdirection gives the cynics the chance to decide: is Derren a fraud... or should he be burnt at the stake? "I've always loved performing live and of course it gives people a chance to see that everything's fair. The audience will be made up of interested parties; some famous faces, some psychics, magicians, psychologists and so on. Part of the fun of it for me is having very little control over who I use on stage. The volunteers will all be randomly selected from the unprepared audience. It's not something I've done on TV before, although it is a taste of what I do on tour. Hopefully it will be a very memorable evening for all concerned."

David Blaine: What is Magic?
10pm on Friday 11th September (1 hour 5 minutes) on Channel 4.
David Blaine travels across America to perform tricks in the UK premiere of his show What Is Magic? He visits New Orleans where he carries out a money trick in front of locals, producing hundreds of dollars at their fingertips before stopping off in New York to conduct magic in front of Orlando Bloom. But the jewel in David's crown is his shot at the infamous Bullet Catch; a trick which sees a 22 calibre bullet being fired at point blank range directly at the magician, who then has to catch the bullet in a small metal cup held in his mouth. The stunt is filmed using Phantom Camera technology which shoots 10,000 frames per second so that not a fraction of the action is missed.

Magic People and Places
11.30am on Thursday 29th July (30 minutes) on BBC Radio Four.
John Sugar digs deep into a bygone era, exploring British magic that centered around key characters and studios. Times have changed since a magician produced a startled rabbit out of top hat with a puff of smoke. Today we expect more, and the modern magician apparently does the impossible before our eyes. But did the magic get there? John hears how the sale of magic has changed with the impact of the internet and the way conventions are developing new environments for its promotion and sale. He also hears about the leading magic shops and studios of 60 years ago, revealing the characters who created the magic. Today, magic revolves around the internet and magic conventions. The key gathering is in Blackpool in late February. John visits the 58th Magic Convention, attended by 3,500 magicians, and talks to the organisers and the performers while soaking up the atmosphere.

Ben Earl: Deception is the title of a new four-part magic series, to be screened by Channel 4 in 2013. Ben recently enjoyed television success with two appearances on Penn & Teller: Fool Us, but this time around will have the opportunity to delve deeper into the deck in each one-hour show. All will have a different theme, closing with a large challenge or stunt every week.

Breaking Magic
Premieres Wednesdays from 20th March, 8.00pm & 8.30pm – Discovery Channel

Breaking Magic is a brand new series featuring jaw-dropping illusions, from street magic, hidden camera trickery, and a big magical stunt, performed by an ensemble of fresh magical talent, including James Galea, Wayne Houchin, Billy Kidd and new British talent Ben Hanlin. The twist: each feat is backed by real science, with an explanation and breakdown to prove it. It feels like magic but it's actually all science - whether it's physics, chemistry, or pure Einstein! Tricks include, turning silver into gold, bending water, and real life voodoo. In the first episode Ben is on the streets of Warsaw to try out a new scientific lie detector test, while back in London, James attempts to stop a cannonball with his own magic...or is it science?

Recorded before Wayne’s horrific fire attack last November.

The Incredible Mr Goodwin

Postby Mandrake » Feb 14th, '13, 17:07

Fans of Jonathan Goodwin's crazy, almost suicidal, escapology activities will be pleased to know he's back, on Watch TV Channel (sorry, non-Sky folks!) on March 7th.

As it says on http://uktv.co.uk/watch/homepage/sid/9404 :

Watch continues to push the boundaries of TV in this brand new and exclusive show that will leave your mind reeling and your jaw hitting the floor.

'Impossible' is merely a challenge for Jonathan Goodwin, a man who combines the skills of Houdini and Superman with the everyday trials of fatherhood and family life.

He is the new breed of escapologist and a professional danger-man, putting himself in the most extreme situations and dodging death every time.

Now this amazing series will leave viewers breathless as Goodwin emulates his childhood heroes, the great American sideshow acts and comic-book characters, taking his unique brand of entertainment onto the streets of Britain and the US.

He'll attempt to pull off spectacular feats of out-of-this-world bravery, agility and physical strength. He'll scale a high rise building to the amazement of the window cleaner, climb over the roof of a car at speed and trigger a bear trap without losing an arm.

But the viewers will get to know him even better, witnessing the extraordinary processes Goodwin goes through behind the scenes as he trains intensively for his performances, many of which have never been attempted before.

I wonder if Steve Cohens special "lost magic decoded" will air in the uk?

I read about it in the genii article and it sounds fascinating.

Also seeing Steve lecture at EMC I thought he seemed like a nice guy.

On Sky channel 109 Tuesday November 12th 11pm (Also on 1 hour later on Ch 155 Watch +1):

    Magic: Ep 1
The history of performance magic. The first show traces the history of mentalism, from the oracle of Delphi through the age of Spiritualism to trickster Derren Brown.

A repeat of course but still worth watching.
