Roughing Fluid - Fricto - 3M - Changing Glue - What's best

Postby Johnny Bravo » Jan 17th, '14, 14:06

Without going into particular effects there are many effect where the joining of two cards to appear as one are very beneficial.

One particular effect I've dusted down & working on again uses this but I'm not happy with the way the card looks when placed down, ie slight separation can be seen but if I apply to much glue around the edges it makes it harder to casually separate when I need to.

I've heard of the above various glues but what works best, what gives a good removable glue that makes as little noise as possible when separating but holds tightly in place so card can be fairly casually handled.
Also I can't find a source for the Fricto fluid anymore, found out about it on a thread here but the link is no longer valid.

Appreciate thoughts on this subject?

One would think this would be an easy one. Sadly it is not because there is no 'one' answer and it depends on exactly what you are doing.

For examples:

If you are in an ID situation then roughing fluid is best.

If however you are looking to place a double on the table then I suggest using nothing but skill. Learn to place a double on the table as one card. It is not easy and there is a knack and you have to practice on different surfaces but I do it all the time without the cards seperating. And I am practicing all the time. It is rare for me to pick up a deck of cards and not place doubles on a surface, my co workers look at me like I'm crazy sitting around at lunch placing a card on the table only to pick it up, shuffle and then place another on the table. Little do they know it is two cards. Little do they know it is part of one of my favourite effects and I've shown it to most of them many times.

If you really need the cards to stick then there are several options. Magicians wax has proven itself to be a magicians favourite, (I don't like it). There is an adhesive artists use to position work and re-position work. Those usually work well just make sure it is non permanent. I know another magician who swears by gorilla snot, not to be confused with gorilla glue. Use the glue and you will never seperate the cards. Gorilla snot will just make it tacky. And no gorilla's are harmed in the making.

I've even seen double sided tape work well. Just make it taky and yes it will have to be replaced.

Let us know what you find.

I like roughing fluid if I'm going to be separating the cards, and repositional glue if I'm going to be sticking one card to another, but yes... it does depend on what trick you're doing.

If there is something recommended in a routine you are trying, then I would say try that first.

Science Friction is another product to add to the list too.

I use spray mount if i need to stick 2 cards together, but i find it too difficult to separate them again if i spray the whole card. So i take a piece of paper and cut out a tiny circle (about the size of the 4th circle in the centre of a bicycle card), i place this over the card (exactly over that small circle on the card) and spray the glue onto the paper, leave it to dry for a while and then the cards will stick perfectly but are really easy to separate and don't make any noise.
You shouldn't need to push the cards together too hard, a light pressure is enough, if you push too hard then they will make a noise when you separate them. If they are lightly stuck together then you are able to spread the cards apart very easily.

Blue Glue/Changin' Glue was always worth trying, if too sticky then dabbing with a finger a few times made it less sticky but still reliable.
