Hello from Brill

Postby TheGroover » Apr 3rd, '14, 10:29

Hi there
I'm based in Brill, Bucks (nearish to Thame and Oxford). I guess I'm an eager newcomer. I work in data visualisation - making charts that people can understand. I got turned on to magic after reading Sleighs Of Hand and realising that the skills in magic (misdirection, patter, psychology) are also at play in data viz. The difference being that they are used for opposite reasons: in magic, it's to entertain and astound. In data, it's about maximising understanding.

I was hooked ever since.

Card magic is my focus - I like the honesty of a deck of cards and that everything has to be done with sleights and misdirection rather than gimmicks.

I'm looking forward to being a member!

Andy

Hello, Andy!

Of course, not everything in card magic has to be sleights and misdirection rather than gimmicks! At the simplest, there's the possibility of decks that are pre-set (or swiftly set in-situ) to a particular configuration: something that's not as convincing without a good fake shuffle to cover it, but still important to a great number of tricks. And then beyond that there are decks that have been tampered with in some way but are still highly examinable/you could use them for a card game (e.g. marked decks, short or tapered cards, etc.). And then beyond that are highly-gimmicked decks that wouldn't withstand inspection: a deck of cards that's all the Queen of Spades, for example, or an ID.

Anyway - welcome, and hope to meet you in person in Headington in the near future!
