Magic in books not magic books

Postby BrianO » May 15th, '14, 08:53

I have recently finished re (re) reading Neil gaimans American Gods and seem to enjoy it more every time I read it. This time around I have to admit getting a little kick out of the fact that the main character plays with coins throughout the book.

Before this, and without having made a conscious effort, I had read night circus and before that dr norrel and mr strange. Both of which have a magical theme.

I have really enjoyed all these books and have no objections to continuing with this theme.

Any recommendations? :D

There's a strong magical theme in "Confessor" by John Gardner. Also take a look at books by Clayton Rawson and Val Andrews. Finally, there's the classic short story "The Magic Shop" by H G Wells; you should be able to find that free online.

Check out The Gilli Gilli Man by TM's TonyB - a thriller using magic, set in a magic location and written by a magician. It doesn't get much better than that.

The Kindle version is a steal, just put The Gilli Gilli Man (Tony Black Mysteries) into the Amazon Search and you'll find it for less than a quid. Lulu are selling the printed version at about a tenner. Incidentally, I notice the cover artwork has changed from the original, as shown in Tony's Avatar, for some reason!

The brief resume of the book is:

High-octane action in a page-turner of a thriller - International illusionist Tony Black has a narrow escape in Abu Dhabi when the hotel he is performing in is destroyed in a terrorist attack. But he has seen the terrorist; and now the mysterious Gilli Gilli Man is on his trail, determined to wipe out the only remaining witness. On the run, Tony takes refuge in a Santa resort in Arctic Finland. But he is not alone: maverick American CIA investigator Dane Todhunter is also trying to bring down the Gilli Gilli Man. And then there is Karin, his love and his Achilles heel. Can Tony use his magical skills to evade the bad guys and save the girl in time? The final confrontation takes place on Christmas Eve on a frozen lake under the dancing Northern Lights. . . Exotic locations, beautiful women, and a man who must fight back any way he knows how.The Gilli Gilli Man is a book you won't be able to put down.

There's a thread about the book at sutra431275.php

(or just click here if you're really lazy)

Have just bought a copy; should be waiting on my Kindle when I get home. Thanks for the tip!
