Impressive card trick, how to?

Postby MrCat » Oct 30th, '14, 13:37

Hey folks, here's a clip from derren brown's great art robbery. I love this trick and I'm wondering if anyone can tell me where I might find how to do it, or can anyone pm me? I'm dying to learn it!

The trick is at about 1:30 in.

Cheers.

It's a very nice routine, I'm not sure that it's something that you can learn as is but have a little think and it shouldn't be too difficult to recreate. ;)

This is a variation of a routine Derren teaches on his DVD, The Devil's Picturebook. It isn't exactly the same, but his earlier routine includes card under box. My recollection is that the routine taught on the DVD is much harder and more "angly" (or is it "angley"?) than the one he performed on TV.

I agree with Lady of Mystery that, if you have a fair knowledge of card magic you can work out what happened in retrospect, but if you want to do this legitimately, you should probably get Derren's DVD. Which is a problem, as I don't think he's selling it at the moment!

But, if I may be frank for a moment, do you really need to learn this? Wouldn't one of the hundred (thousand?) other routines that are available for sale be easier? They are likely cheaper (really cheap if you already own them), available fully formed (as opposed to you reverse engineering) and there are no morally grey issues about taking another's work.

Why do magicians always want to do what they've seen someone else do, when there are so many other great tricks out there that the public haven't seen? That's not a dig at you, MrCat. When I was younger, I was similar, but this was before the internet made acquiring new magic so much easier.

I positively don't want to do anything people have done on TV, except the version of Out of This World David Blaine has done at least twice on TV and that's because I was doing it before those shows!

Hey thanks folks, that's great advice. It's true there a thousand million other tricks I could learn instead yes, but I have just fallen in love with that little routine and how else to put it, hmmmm...I Want IT! :D I did wonder if derren had much out in the way of tricks as I haven't actually looked too hard I must confess, I 've always associated him with mentalism / hypnosis and have one of his books more on that subject, clever memory training and such like.

No dig taken Part Timer :) it's true I'm fresh and still get very taken by stuff I've seen on tv or in those savage promo vids for props that make them look like pure gold dust, every single one of them., I'm also learning it's usually 10% prop, 45% handling and 45% you having fun and banter, or there abouts I 'd reckon. And also a very good point about what I haven't sen about on tv or anything. I've picked up a few from Mark Watson's book I just got, it's a fab book and I've got some down from there, but I could very much see myself doing this trick and it working well with me and my general style of chat if you catch my drift, so I'm very curious and eager. I'll have a look about, and a good think about it!

Cheers!

Ouch! I feel really quite ashamed now haha, I must admit it, I went back and had a very good scan and quite right Mr Invisible! I found I could see everything, it's very very bold! I guess that's what makes it! I guess there was maybe jhust part of me that thought there had to be something more involved that I'd never be able to figure out. Hmmm I'll have to work on that!

Mmm yes, the only bit I'm not sure about, the pack back out of the pocket again. Hard to see with those camear angles. Very sly move!

With audiences who are looking the way you want them to (direct attention with yourpersonality ;)) you can be really really bold. I'm always amazed at how boldly I can load a folded card under the person who has just signed it's glass with them not noticing until they next pick the glass up. If people notice then you just make it a different reveal :)

Very nice! I reckon you've been practicing a bit :) That's gotta be a reasonably tough recovery with a signed card, I'll mull that idea over.

I perform this effect from the Devils Picturebook for friends and family. It's simply called Card Under The Box and believe me, i've never been caught yet. There are a couple of moves which you need to get used to, not because of the difficulty, but because of their 'boldness' as has already been mentioned, but when you are pretty much directing your audience where they should be looking and what they should be doing it becomes very easy to do. I highly recommend adding your own touches such as getting laymen to check the jokers for doubles, checking the card box out, drawing attention to your card mat to instruct what you want them to do. It's a real stunner when you get it right and it leaves laymen laughing in hysterics.
