Using my new ID

Postby MrCat » Nov 8th, '14, 14:21

Hey folks, just got my first ID through the post seconds ago. I was just wondering if anyone could give me any links or useful pointers to different things to do with it. I'm sure there are many roads to finding the spec's card but so far I've only ever really seen one trick performed with it essentially, on my travels round the internet looking for magic routines...

Any tips and pointers most welcome!

Cheers :)

There's quite a few different variations you can do with an ID. One of my favourites is a birthday diary type effect, I hand a spec a diary and ask them to think of a date that's got a special meaning to them. On each of the dates in the diary is a different card and if by magic the card at the date they're thinking of happens to be the card that's reversed in the deck.

That is genius! I like it a lot. I thought you meant a spare pack marking each page of a 52 week diary, but I'm realising you mean just write them in :)

Pretty sure Jay Sankey has a DVD full of current presentations for it...

No, just write in a different card for each day.

You got it seconds ago? Chances are any layperson you show it too will not have seen it. Why not give the routine that goes with it a go? I'm sure the results will be just as good if not better then any other you may find.

Now if you want a different method, I will help you with that. Richard Saunders taught it to me and it changed my life. I'm dyslexic so math is hard and it kept me away from the effect.

So re-arrange the deck if math is not your thing. I arrange it so all the odd cards are one way the even are the other. I always put the cards into the box the same way. Person says an even card I pull the cards out and fan them odd side out. Now comes the clever part. Fan the cards out towards the audience rather than the ceiling. So the backs of the cards are now facing you, (whispers and they are even) fan through fan the cards and boom! You are done. Yes when re aranging the cards you will have to make a choice at one point and take two odd cards and they will have to be even. Just remember those cards.

Google for Dan Harlan's Jumbo I D routine, it's on YouTube and shows a great effect plus the way of displaying the deck up at eye level. Although the routine is available to buy, I'm sure most of us can figure out what's going on. Mark Waddington once posted a great vid of his competition winning I D routine where the volunteer mentally chooses to throw away cards from the imaginary deck in their hands until only one card remains - you can work out the rest!

The best version of ID I've ever seen for magicians was brilliant but what an effort to learn. First one has to memorize the deck as it is non gimmicked. Then one has to know exactly where every card in the deck is, then one has to be able to cut to any number between one and fifty two without looking and be able to do it pretty much one handed. Then one has to be able to turn that card over un detected. Usually easy because it is all done behind the back.

When asked why go through so much when you can use an ID to the same end. The response was simple. This method was for magicians only because a lay person won't know the difference, and this magician spends a lot of time in airports and on airplanes so plenty of years to practice.

I'm really pleased it went down well, that's one of my favourite openers if I'm doing walk about or table hopping. The nice thing with it is that it's very easy to follow up with a related routine, perhaps if the date's a birthday, reveal some memorable fact about a past birthday or if it's an anniversary you could launch into an anniversary waltz.
