The mail order psychic: Richard Webster.

Does anyone have Richard Websters book "The mail order psychic" ??
I have a lot of Richards published work & know it is normally well worth every single penny. But I am unsure about "The mail order psychic as it looks to be slightly outdated.
The internet has altered the way a lot of self marketing & connections are made over the past couple of years. Now it seems everyone is PC savvy & happy to make contact via the internet.
Personally I am interested in internet marketing & ways of working & advertising today & I am not sure that "mail order" will give me the information I want.

I recommend everything that Richard Webster puts out. And I do have this book. It actually has a lot about computer print out mail order readings which at the time I wasn't particularly interested in because I didn't have a computer and even when I did I couldn't understand it properly anyway. It does describe how to do mail order readings on cassette tape although I suppose nowadays you would do it on CDs. I think I have earned more money from Richard Webster's books than anything else I have ever read.

While on this very subject I have to say that I am not overly impressed with the stuff magicians put out on psychic readings. 90 percent of it is on quick readings for entertainment purposes which is good as far as it goes. I don't think I have seen very much (if anything) on more serious readings. Anybody can come up with some generalised waffle for ten minutes or so, and with some people only 5 minutes. I don't see much guidance on readings which take 30 minutes to an hour which deal with the problems people have. Richard Webster does at least put out a book on one hour full length readings.

People don't come to a psychic when everything in their life is hunky dory. They visit when something is troubling them. There is virtually nothing put out by mentalists which get into any depth with regard to this.

Thanks Mark. I also have a lot of Richards work, but it was the print off & cassette talk that put me off. Much of what I do is via email & skype & I print off very little, other than maybe Richards "You are a Rainbow." It was the marketing side I was interested in. There is a fair amount of shut eye information around & that is helpful, it was just knowing the quality of Richards work, I thought if he has published something relevant about internet working & publicity it would be worth having.

I don't think he wrote anything about Internet marketing specifically. Just as well because I wouldn't understand it anyway. However, he did write an excellent book on building up a psychic practice by non internet methods. Alas I always forget the title of books. It was something to do with "How to develop a psychic practice by full length readings" or words to that effect. And he also wrote a very good little book published by Martin Breese on psychic matters and there was some very good advice therein.

I personally like to see clients in person. My fear of doing so is long since past. It is the best way there possibly is.

This is absolutely true quite simply because most mentalists are not billing themselves or working as readers. Throwing in a quick reading as part of a routine is great (and I do it a lot) but dangerous if you can't follow it up with a full reading if asked (and you will get asked). And another problem with not being able to give full readings when asked, is that you could be missing out on another source of income.

Until I returned to the UK in August 2014 I worked up and down the Costa Del Sol in Spain for 7 years performing my mentalism act in show bars and clubs. The act is specifically aimed at selling readings after the show and that is what I did 2 - 3 nights a week for years. An hour standup show followed by paid tarot readings for those in the audience who wanted them. I'd often do 10 - 15 readings after the show and finish at 4am.

I'd say the place to learn a reading system isn't from a magician or mentalist but by studying the works of real readers, learning a system whether it be tarot, palms, runes or belly button reading, learn it inside out and do readings with the mindset of it being real rather than a trick.

I have (as far as I am aware) all of Richard Webster's work (it's all good) and had a long email correspondence with him some years ago when I was setting up my psychic shows in Marbella. However the original Mail order psychic system is pretty much out of the window these days with the advent of the internet, I do know of readers who will produce a chart etc and send it to you when you send them the cash via paypal, however there is so much DIY astrology (and other) software available online for free these days, that I'm not sure how viable that is. Live skype readings is another system some readers I know are using and in these days of online conference calls and webinars, could be an alternative to the mail order route.

Richard doesn't go into the marketing aspect of the mail order psychic in depth in the book other than giving examples of taking out free adverts in the local press, so it wouldn't really help much with the marketing aspect.

And now for a blatant plug, if you haven't already taken advantage of it, the 10% discount offer on all my books and routines on my website, finishes at midnight on the 31st of December so don't miss out. Visit ww.scottcreasey.com/products-main/ to find out more.

And a Happy New Year to you all.

Regards

Scott

Yes. I have done shows and afterwards done readings. I have to say I find it downright depressing doing serious readings after being up on a stage on a high getting laughter and applause and then have to go straight into everyone's worries and problems. Same thing doing a lecture at a psychic fair. After doing the lecture which I tend to make amusing having to then start talking about lines on the hand and the meanings of the tarot makes my mind go numb.

Mind you, I quite like doing gigs where I wander around doing close up magic and then follow up by doing entertainment short palm readings. I hate wandering up to strangers and doing tricks even though I am pretty good at it. I think you are in a position of weakness when you do that. However, when I start the palm readings they come to me and I am now in a position of strength. The line up is endless. And I have always said the worst palmist will get better attention than the best close up magician. If you can combine close up magic with readings no other magician will be able to compete with you with magic alone, no matter how good they are.

I came to mentalism via a well known ritual magic school & thus also a lodge. I learnt the Quabbalah & Tarot etc in the language & approach of occultists.
I have the books, the language & I do like the approach that gives me to do readings.
I do readings now, but feel I could earn some more money if I exploited the opportunities that the internet offers, for example offering cheap 3 card readings for entertainment only to meet the requirements of a well known site.
I do like face to face readings, but a few pounds per 3 card reading that I can do in my own time & with no real effort involved in either doing it, or finding it, seems to good too turn down & if an occasional cheap reading turns into a Skype or larger email reading, then that is even better.

Just slightly off topic:

Richard Webster and Neal Scryer will offer a lecture each and a cooperative master class next year in Europe.
