Wedding Fair

Postby Johnny Wizz » Jan 24th, '15, 14:31

I am going to do a wedding fair on 1st of February sharing a stall, and so sharing the cost with a friend who is a dance teacher. She is trying for business teaching couples a wedding dance and I am trying to get some wedding business near my new home in Cornwall. I know that a number of TM'rs have gone down this route and if anyone has and advice to offer it will be gratefully received.

Well, I did my first wedding fair today. The first thing I have to say about it all is that I am totally knackered! I did five hours straight without a sit down and only coffee and a packet of crisps to keep me going. As a first attempt I shared a stand with a couple of friends who are dance teachers. They were pitching for pupils for the first wedding dance. It was a really good day in terms of the quality of exhibitors and the number of punters coming in. What neither I or my friends had calculated was how many potential customers were looking at weddings as late as October / November 2016. However, we both got loads of interest and a lot of leads. It was also a great education in just what big business there is in people getting married. Before I went I agonised over the price I was going to ask. When I found out what other services were charging I was pretty sure I had underpriced myself! There were enough this year weddings to make feel that I might get a return on my investment sooner rather than later. I need two gigs from it to break even when all of my fair, equipment and printing costs are taken in to account. I was the only magician there, the only other entertainer was a singer. I met a lot of useful people and networked with some prestigious venue representatives. From one of these I have picked up a really good lead for non wedding business. So, my immediate reaction is that it was a day and money well spent. I performed a lot. I learned what will pull people in. I learned that if you don't keep a torch to rose well lubricated with WD40 it will seize up at the critical moment and start to burn the rose!!!! I also learned that when two female punters come up together and say they are both getting married in this day and age it is quite possible that they mean to each other! I feel that I know a lot more tonight than I did this morning and I will update this post if and when any business comes in.
