Magicians always seem to complain if fellow magicians don't credit a particular sleight correctly or if they allegedly steal somebody else's method, and yet this person copied Derren's entire trick, performed it on television and no-one seems to complain. Granted he was only 14 at the time, but still. Anybody care to shed any light on this?

The same happend to Piff. his whole act was copied.

In one case, the boy was young and his TV appearance would help his future career. It is difficult to define your own personality and style at such a young age. I think the comments from P&T were more along the lines of encouragement than technical praise.

In the other case the performance was blatant plagarism and he was shot down by the judges.

Also, Derren put the trick and explanation on a dvd which has the implication that he doesn't have a problem with other people performing it. Now, if the lad was trying to sell it as an effect that he'd created himself, either in book or dvd form, then that would be plagiarism.

I can confirm that they were edited somewhat. I was at the filming for that part of the show (the performances are all spliced from different days, and with good reason). Penn said exactly what he said there, but he also asked if anyone in the audience knew how it was done. Me and my friend, because we were utter asses, raised our hands. Penn then asked if we were magicians, and we confirmed we were.

My reasons for doing it was I was tired and pi**ed off. I had never been in a T.V audience before, so I wasn't aware that it involved standing in a line for hours on end. When the show started, every act save one was a * card trick, done on a far away stage with no close up camera to show what the hell was going on. Then this kid who admitted to being a Derren Brown fan and a Penn and Teller fan, and thus should have known that they knew each others work, came on and expected us to believe he had mastered the intricacies of reading peoples responses and influencing their decisions before learning how to shave. It put me over the edge and I went from understanding mature(ish) adult to pissy, cruel man-child who wouldn't give anyone a break.

I'm really glad it was edited out, and I was actually sweating bullets up to the point that bit aired, I was afraid me being a dickhead to a 14 year old was going to be immortalised forever on T.V.

Invoke not reason. In the end it is too small a deity.

I disagree Jean. Yes you and you friend were slightly mean to that kid but you had to be home$t. And you have to admit, 1: the one guy that didn't get aired rightly shouldn't have been, and lee Hathaway s trick was awesome.

Assuming Wikki has it's facts right, in the pilot show there were three acts filmed but not included in the broadcast version.

    Morgan & West
    Damien O'Brien
    Noel Qualter

The eight episodes broadcast during 2011 didn't include:

    Chris Cox
    James Brown
    Marc Oberon
    David Masters
    Noel Qualter
    David Jay

There's a reference to these unbroadcast acts being available on ITV Player - I haven't checked.

It was Damian O'Brien, the only act I saw that day (apart from Penn and Tellers) that entertained me.

It is on in Ireland at the moment and I am loving it. FInally TV magic of some quality.

Also, in comparison to the regular talent shows, Penn and Teller are nice to the acts. Classy guys.
