Imprint (by Jason Yu)

Foreword

Hey there folks, this is going to be a tough review to write but I thought I'd give it a bash now just to let you all know how it is so far

The Effect

You produce your wallet, pull out a banknote (or other paper item), and produce a coin or any other small object. You show your note or other paper thing and ask your spectators to examine the small object and when they are satisfied you tell a story of how you can stash it actually 'in' the note. You then take the coin or small object and throw it at the note. The coin or object then vannishes and the note you are holding now has an imprint of the exact same coin or object on the note. You then hand out/give away the note and look amazingly cool :D

Cost

I've found it between £24 and £28 on a quick search tho I got it on special promo offer.

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

Tricky. There are no sleights involved but there is a special move that will require you to spend some time perfecting it if you want to really melt brain matter with this. That's why I haven't done it yet. I want to say it's 2 and 4 at the same time so I'll say 3 ;)

Review

This could be an amazing trick for you too as it already is when you see it in the hands of Jason the creator. If you watch this vid here as you may have already: Imprint Live performance
What you will see there is a pretty well fair and accurate video of what you too can do. I've added this because before I got the trick I read talk on that video and people not liking the way the camera cut back and forth etc. I can tell you without spoiling anything that apart from the romoval of the bill from the wallet you will see every vaguely technical move and skill required quite clearly haha, even more so when you're in the know obviously. I know that's really irritating for you guys but I did say this would be tough at the start. In essence you see everyhting in that vid that you really need to or would want to as a magician I'd say. The one slightly misleading aspect of the vid is the apparently free choice of coin. Don't expect to be able to pull that off without some extra work! Not impossible but you would have to be very well prepaired or a master at suggestion :D Jason here I'm guessing is well prepared, either that or they're his mates.

This is not an 'out of the box and you're performing' type effect. There is a gimmick to build, it's very simple and relatively easy to construct but if it's not perfect it will show badly. This is made easier or harder by the currency or paper that wish to magically imprint your object on.

As for angle-proofness; It's actually pretty angle proof depending on the object. You may not really want people looking over your shoulder depending on what exactly your object is but certainly with a coin you may be able to get away with it after a lot of practice. Lighting conditions though, it's much better in dimmer conditions as a bright well lit room could give the game away. Overall tho I guess this also comes down to how good you are at misdirection!

A lot of the misdirection needed to really do the trick is provided for you by the effect its self so you don't really have to do much.

Positives:

The main vannish is just great. It's a real beauty. There are various choices of types of vannish depending on the object you choose to use but all are pretty much as easy as eachother.
Without having performed this yet to an audience I can tell you that when you get it just right in a practice sesh it does look awesome and just as you'd hope.

This effect does I think look best and most magical with money, but it can be used with the same (or probably more) ease on any other thing made of paper such a newspaper, magazine or ticket of some kind. I have yet to try these but I think I'll have a go shortly.

The instructions on the DVD are clear and streight to the pont, no hanging about or waffle :)

Negatives (for me):

This is sadly one of those tricks that with curency other than a dollar bill it may prove significantly harder to do. I have tried it with my own custom notes I have designed for other tricks and it looks OK but not 100% satisfactory. That could just be my own critical eye tho and I am going to try it with other stuff soon so I'll report how that goes. I still don't dare show it to anyone else yet tho due to gimmick quality. (The stuff you get in the pack is great quality I hasten to say, it's the quality of your build that will make or break this!)

You may find you have to destroy some currency if you wish to go down that road. However, there are other options.

Overall

This is one of those effects that may frustrate some of you with the DIY aspect, but hopefully the potential end result will inspire you to perseveer and find something that works for you. It will take some experimenting though. I think it is a bit overpriced but the vannish method I think will please you a lot. It's something that the more creative thinkers will easily be able to use for other stuff outwith this effect, and someone has already mentioned to me some new ideas on how to tweak it with this effect so you do get some great inspiration and a bit of food for thought along those lines :)

I'm not sure that at the moment I'd go so far as to highly reccommend it for those that doen't have any spare cash to burn. However, when I got this though the post and watched the DVD I was rather pleased and quite impressed at what it revealed. I currently remain mildly frustrated in the gimmick creation stage but that really is just me and I may come back ina day or two harking about how great it is on a magazine or something. There is also the aspect of the 'special move' that will take quite a lot of repeat repeat repeat to get to perfection wha looks so easy in the video.

If you're looking for something you can tool up and go out with after an evening watching the DVD and practicing, or are mildly impatient this probably isn't for you.

If you want to take the time to build the perfect gimmick and get this one nailed down tight, there's absolutely no real reason you too can't look as cool as Jason Yu there, but you'll have to have a nice ammount of dedication to your goal :D

I like the effect so much as seen on TV, and knowing the method which was a total pleasure and did make me smile imensely to learn, I'm determined to keep going as I am now and get something together that I would dare to take out. I.e. the perfect gimmick and paper I can easily use that will fit the situation/banter, until I either get it just right or go a bit crazy(er) trying. I've ordered up some special 'money-like' paper to print my custom bills on, and will try it with other printed media too and let y'all know but in the meantime I hope this review gives you some vaguely clearer idea of what to expect.

The tagline 'closest thing to a hollywood special effect'...well, I'm sure you could say that about a lot of effects out there when you have them nailed. However, I'd have to agree when you get this looking just right it will look damn peachy just as it does on the vids and with no more effort than you see on said vids.

I'm going to give this a 3.7 out of 5.
It's minus 1.3 for the US V's Other currency aspect which is a bit dissapointing and let's face it, quite a major hinderance for anyone not in the US wanting to do this with local currency specifically.

Thanks for bearing with me on that one and I hope that's useful in some way for anyone wanting to get ths effect. If you have just got this effect and need any tips or want to exchange thoughts feel free to PM me and I'll be delighted to give you my tips and tell you what I've learned so far or hear your thoughts on it :D

Cheers

Thanks for the review - very informative :)

I think I might pass on this one, as I've recently found out that I've not got too much patience when it comes to constructing these kind of gimmicks .... still playing around with a recent release (review coming .... eventually).

QUESTION:
If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??

Damn. Too bad. Another question: what about business cards? Anyway, I think I'll get it. I'm just too curious at this point and I see too many potential applications. Don't know how many are possible though.

MiKo - Maybe a business card, maybe a playing card too with some addaption, I can't really tell you whyit may not necessarily work on here without giving it away! Likewise why my playing card looked almost great but not quite. Let me know when you get it tho and how you get on, I'll be very interested to hear :)

Cheers
