Gimmick Creation Frustration Business

Postby MrCat » May 21st, '15, 17:44

Hey folks,

Just thinking alound here and well, musing :)

I've got a few tricks that require some of the old DIY. You all know the types of stuff. It can vary wildly from something pretty simple to something that really taxes your creative tallents and millimeter perfection, and can drastically stretch your patience sometimes ...those ones.

Well, I recently acquired a few effects that require such devotion to the art, and yes they have stretched my patience a bit, even though I do love getting the glue and glitter out and and making a lovely card for someone :) So, also recently had the luck of being offered (for a fee) someone to make a lovely and perfect gimmick of such a sort for me by someone who I think does it quite a lot and conequently is very good at it. It just arived yesterday and ohhhhhhh what a pleasure to behold.

So, I was just wondering whether this happens much on the scene that I don't know about? It seels like such a great idea for someone who gets good at building a certain gimmick to (for a desired fee) make the gimmick for others too and save so much frustration and maybe bring some effects with 'potential' a bit more into the forefront by cutting out a lot of the reasons more people don't give them a try. ...If you catch my drift? Does that make any sense? Or it may already happen lots and I just don't know it yet :D

Anyway, just thought I'd throw that thought out there for comment...

Cheers

It hasn't been something I have ever come across but for my show and during rehearsals I did get pretty good at making a particular gimmicked envelope as we went through so many. Though with that in mind I have over the years accidentally rubber cemented myself to my desk for times than I care to admit. I don't think DIY as putting to many people off of effects mostly because it means that the gimmick can usually be replaced for very little money and easily personalized. At least that is what it's like for me.
