If I say "poetry"...

Postby MiKo » Jun 3rd, '15, 12:30

...what do you think?

For the next meeting at my magic club, the theme of the evening is "Poetry". I have a fair idea of what trick to do, but I need a little help: I need a list of word (let's say 15-20) that people associate with the concept of "Poetry". So, what words come into your mind?

Meaning
Art
Literature
Ballad
Haiku
Sonnet
Shakespeare
Ode
Imagery
Metaphor
Creativity

By the way, I highly recommend Haiku by Vincent Hedan. I love it, and it definitely relates to poetry.
That said, it sounds like your on your own track so I'd stick with that. Creativity is so important.

just a quick post:

the trick went pretty well. It was voted second best trick of the night. The first one being actually Haiku, that was brought by another member :)

As a side note: I was quite surprised last week when I went to see Derren Brown's Miracle and found out that one of the effects he presented could be achieved exactly in the same way I had devised! I am quite proud of myself, I must say :)

Not surprisingly a lot of what Derren does can be achieved by many of us. Not necessarily using the same method but the end result will be the same!

That's true, but what surprised me was that he combined the same two principles I used just a few days before in more or less the same way. A flattering coincidence. It might well be that he used a different method, of course, but given the fact that it can hardly be simpler, I doubt it. It kinda spoiled one of the final surprises for me, because I was expecting it, but it also suggest that i might be doing something right.

I also have mixed emotions under those circumstances, I'm chuffed that one of the big names uses the same tricky bits as I do but disappointed as I feel 'they' ought to be using 'real magic' or at least some very complex and complicated method! Having said that, Wayne Dobson always advocates making things as simple as possible and re-engineered many classic effects to remove all the sleight of hand thus turning them into almost self workers and giving more room for focus on the presentation.

It's good to know that your thinking is identical, or at least parallel, to the processes used by one of the well known performers - well done!
