Magic with cigarette papers

Postby Mr Grumpy » Jul 12th, '15, 10:38

I'm always keen to add routines that take up little or no pocket space. Recently been learning Gypsie Thread for walkaround, for example, and I just bought the Confessions of a Needle Swallower DVD (more for parlous and stage).

I was thinking about magic with cigarette papers... Do you rate it? Can it play big enough to be worth leaning? If I buy the appropriate books or DVDs, might I be able to put together, say, a three phase routine?

No doubt there's a lot of cigarette paper magic dotted around, but off the top of my head I can't recall seeing anything that didn't seem trivial, or fiddly/fussy (there's a trick where you spin a cigarette paper on your finger after folding it certain ways, I just find that sort of thing annoying, it's more of a pub stunt than a trick)...

But I expect there's some real classic cig paper magic out there that I've somehow missed!

You can T&R one; the only method I've used is the one in Amateur Magician's Handbook but I've seen comments about other methods on some forums. You could also do three-in-hand-one-in pocket or sponge ball routines. "Plays big" is not really an appropriate description for these effects, though.

Another possibility is using them for PW and other pellet mentalism. See 13 Steps.

Thanks, Barry. I know a T&R, from David Bonsall's sugar sachet/sugar cube routine; I think David developed that from a cigarette paper routine though am not sure on that. I can certainly use that.

Sponge ball moves, hadn't thought of.

Maybe something like Slydini's four paper balls to hat, hmm...

Conceal small neo in a balled cig paper, use small paper cup, like those used for ketchup in fast food places, and wear a PK ring. Hey presto, a chop cup is born!

Worth a try! I already do Gary Jones' Fireballs actually.

Darel mentions a torn/restored cigarette paper in the Gypsy Thread (he calls it Hindu Thread) on one of his 'tapes' (I know it from the World's Greatest Magic Gypsy Thread). I couldn't make out the name of the magician though. Sounds a bit like Newt Lightsfig or something! Anyone know?

Of course! Was on the tip of my tongue!

I was nearly right though, wasn't I.

An interweb search quickly lead me (indirectly) to this:
