The Illusionists 2015/2016 UK Show

Postby Mandrake » Dec 4th, '15, 12:43

The Shaftesbury Theatre, London.

I saw this show at the afternoon presentation on Wednesday and it’s well worth seeing.

Basically a re-run of the 2013 version with different performers, apart from Kevin James and Andrew Basso who feature in both versions. See ftopic50827.php and ftopic50442-15.php#p460778.

The blurb:

THE ILLUSIONISTS features a cast of seven magical superheroes including:
The Magician, Jamie Raven. The runner-up in Britain's Got Talent 2015, Jamie's first audition for the smash hit ITV show has been watched by 10 million people on YouTube, to date, and he wowed audiences of over 13 million during the live final last month. This is his West End debut.

The Escapologist, Andrew Basso. Italy's star escape artist, Andrew considers Houdini his hero and is fast becoming one of the world's most popular illusionists. He is the only person in the world to perform Houdini's famous Water Torture Cell with absolutely no covers

The Inventor, Kevin James. Known for innovative illusions, Kevin is an inventor, comedian and collector of the strange and unusual. Kevin is one of the most prolific inventors of magic in the world and has created some of the most celebrated illusions of the last century

The Deductionist, Colin Cloud. A forensic mind reader and the closest thing in the universe to the real life Sherlock Holmes. Mixing mind magic and brain science he'll leave you convinced he's a mystical savant with the hypnotic powers of a calculated angel. He's potentially the most dangerous man in the world. Luckily, he's on our side.

The Warrior, Ben Blaque. One of the only performers on earth to attempt this type of stage performance, Ben Blaque has dazzled crowds across this world with his completely unique display of archery and showmanship

The Manipulator, Den Den. A master of manipulation, Den Den is the magician of the moment, having risen to fame very quickly amongst his peers. He was recently awarded the prestigious ‘Gold Medal Award of Honor' by the Society of American Magicians, the highest award from the S.A.M, which has gone to only one magician before him.

The Trickster, David Williamson. Watch him closely as his sleight of hand talents are something to behold - or not! You might have seen him featured on Masters of Illusion and ABC's, Champions of Magic. Don't be fooled by his appearance - The Trickster will get you every time!
I won‘t give anything away but Jamie Raven did all the stuff he featured to great reaction on BGT – plenty of references to Simon Cowell as well! Andrew Basso did the water torture escape, Apart from a few other effects, Kevin James did his signature Charlie Chaplin and Mad Surgeon routines. Colin Cloud not only did a great deal of mentalism, he also MC’d the show – one of his routines will, by definition, be different at each show. The paper aeroplanes were good fun as well! Ben Blaque was very skilful and didn’t actually injure anyone or himself with his crossbow act. Den Den was the typical slow motion manipulator with cards and paper cranes – not my sort of thing but he finished the show with a truly magical card routine which just has to be seen to be appreciated. David Williamson was, well, David Williamson! His act featured the famous Miser’s Dream and Rocky Raccoon segments using four kids from the audience. It didn’t occur to me until later that some of those kids should really have been in school at that time of day!

A team of dancers and a rock band completed the lineup and created a great atmosphere.

The theatre wasn’t full by any means and I understand that there are tickets available for most shows until the finish on Jan 3rd. If you have the time and can get down to London, treat yourself to a helping of very, very entertaining live magic!
