Shrinking And Growing Head Illusion by Bruce Kalver ?

Postby nikmagick » Mar 7th, '09, 10:38

Hello,

Quick question... which type of electric screwdriver (or the like) do you use for this? At Blackpool he suggested about 140 rpm and I wondered what kit other other people use?

thanks in advance,

N

Bruce used a Black & Decker one but any of the B&Q/Focus own brand types run at similar speeds.

Ill dig out the one I use and let you know, but I know that the screwdriver should cost you less than £5

Black and Decker cordless. I bought it for £4 when Woolies was selling items cheaply.

Does anyone have a 'routine' for this? Or some set up or patter that goes beyond 'watch the spiral, count down from 10, now look at my head?' Having said that, on the (few) occasions I've done it at a kids party, I repeat it with the birthday child at the centre.

I dont think it needs to be a routine per se.

I do this as a mass hypnosis experiment, getting them to look into the centre whilst the countdown theme tune plays... I do a repeat later on. First time I make the head bigger, second I make the head smaller.

It always seems to get better reactions when the head shrinks I find.

I use Kalver's suggestion from BB.

Once with my head growing.

Bring out a volunteer and once with their head shrinking.

and if it's going really well (and house lights permitting)...

once again with the growing head, but this time with the audience looking at someone sitting next to them

As a stage hypnotist I have always been interested in doing this. But I never took the final step of actually buying it.
Then I saw it done on a stage recently, and for me the shrinking and expanding effect was too minor to be of any interest. I know others get value out of this product, but to be honest I just don't get it.
I know that doesn't answer the original posters question, but at least I have it off my chest.

I fully afree with poster TonyB.

The only difference being, I had never see;n it done on stage as a magic trick.

Let's face it: It just is NOT magical!

Talk about the emperor's new clothes. . . .

I also thought it would be useful in my hypnosis show so I bought it directly from Bruce Kalver when he appeared in Toronto. However I have never used it once since you have to buy some sort of screwdriver that was not supplied. I have no idea what I am supposed to buy so I have never bothered with the damn thing. It was a silly impulse buy on my part.

Yes, I agree with the comments about the trick being rather trivial and non-magical - to an adult audience.

I've never seen it as anything more than a fun thing to do with kids. Which it is. Thanks for the various suggestions.

I also just use it as a fun thing to do, but the adults seem to like it as well.

Has anyone discovered this as a mobile app? Would be good for walkaround for just a few people.

Sounds like a good suggestion for some enterprising person who knows how to create apps!!

Having said that, I have a version which came from Hawkins Bazaar some years ago and it's just a spinner - a weighted disc with a point in the centre underside, spin it with a short stem on the upper side and concentrate - works very well and no need for a drill or screwdriver.
