getting live experience

Postby snickers » May 15th, '16, 16:09

Hi guys,

I am one of those hobbyists who absolutely loves magic, loves practicing at home but am frustrated at the lack of performing I do.

I do stuff for my family and get a buzz out of it, but I want to get out and practice and improve on people to improve my magic.

Rather than "just to do it!, anyone got any tips for us 'secret performers' who are simply wasting the talent they have!

I was thinking of maybe going to an old people's home or something, but I'm not comfortable going up to a stranger in a pub..

Appreciate anyone's thoughts or experiences.

Thanks,

Hello.. Do you belong to a magic club ? If so, you can get plenty of advice from other workers who regularly perform at gigs, ie weddings , hen nights, and stags.. These are the people who can advice you on going out into the magic world and polishing up your act and gaining confidence. Also you can have the opportunity of practicing what you know in front of your fellow magicians and asking for advice on your performance.. Getting past your first paid gig can be a bit nerve racking, but once you have this behind you, I'm sure you be itching for more... Good luck regardless on what you choose. Keep us posted.
Regards Garry. :)

My advice is, just go out and do it!! Strangers react very differently to friends. Sometimes you can a make a mistake that a friend will pick up on, but a 60 year old woman in front of 100 people would never dream of doing. Learning the difference can't be taught and is only done through experience. Rotary clubs have guest speakers at most meetings (I'm an ex-Rotarian) as do the WI. They would relish the opportunity of having a magician/mentalist come and speak to them. I got a lot of gigs from doing such evenings, for free. Phone them up and offer to come and speak to them. They'll say yes, I guarantee it!!!!! Go into local restaurants. Offer your services to a local Indian for free on a Saturday night. They WILL say yes. Clearly, there must come a point when you stop doing things for free, but the opportunities for magicians to gain real world experience are legion, you just have to go out and grab them. Once you've done a couple, you'll be fearless!!

Good luck

Charities quite often have gala nights, they can be a great way to get experience. Get in touch with any local charities and see if they're planning anything and if they'd be interested in having you perform. I've done quite a few gigs like that and often these would lead to paid work.
