Restored & Torn card

Postby joelhall » Nov 30th, '16, 18:35

So, while I've been working on themed routines, I'm still passionate about that most loved of all types of magic: the cards.

And no, the title isn't a typo or the result of a few too many beers. It's something I'm currently trying to work out the method for down to a tee.

I have a few effects I'm working on, but I'm really interested in T&R effects; I've never found one I particularly love, method-wise, and most follow the same basic idea, effect-wise.

Soooooo.... over to you guys. What would you like to see in a T&R routine? Spectator rips the card themselves? Pieces jumping back together, visually? I have a lot of ideas, but whether they're everyone's cup of tea, remains to be seen. So, as a magic lover - let's hear your ideas.

How about something other than a card, I love Shawn Farquhar's torn and restored photo routine, I forget the name of it at the moment. It might be interesting to see where you can take the good old T&R card and apply the principals to something a bit different.

I have certainly toyed with the idea of other objects, including borrowed objects, which necessitates aome distraction and cover. The reason I've thought about the cards is mainky because there's so many versions, but I've yet to see something 'outside the box'. The idea of a spectator tearing a signed card, and the restoration napping in their hands has been a long time obsession of mine! As has the reverse: beginning with torn cards, and restoring a randomly chosen card.

Having said that, I'm currently trying to work out the details of soany card tricks, I may be sick of the sight of them!

Try to keep the spectator in mind and not the magician. What we would like to see is far different from what a spectator wants to see. A spectator wants to see magic done well. For me as a magician all effects, coins or not, when you destroy something and bring it back, it is all the same. It is a restoration, be it a watch (as in a watch bag where you destroy the spectators watch and of course restore it) a card, a photograph a credit card etc.

What I would think about is, what has the most amount of impact on a spectator. I would think it would be something personal. Unfortunatly for us actual photographs have gone by the wayside. But just imagine having a spectator handing you a photograph of their child. Then you proceed to rip it up? That in itself has a lot of impact. And then of course you restore it. After that you know that everytime that person shows somebody that picture they are going to tell the story of how the magician tore up that picture and restored it. A card or a business card doesn't mean much to a spectator and thus lessons the impact.
