bmat wrote:To be honest it sounds like one of a thousand variations of a pretty standard effect. How long have you been involved in magic? I'm not about to go searching as I am not that interested in it. But there are most likely variations of the effect in Tarbel course in Magic as well as 13 steps to mentalism to name two. But you would have to read between the lines because the presentation is going to be different.

I was going to reply on similar lines. This is a classic effect, but one not done as much now, maybe because it's not 'sexy' enough for modern audiences. I saw something very similar when I was a kid, and there is a card trick which is a little analogous to it.

On September 22nd Liam57 wrote:I recently watched Ben Hanlin at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and as very impressed. He done a trick where every seat had an envelope with 4 flyers in it (everybody had the same 4 flyers in the same order) he got everyone to rip them in half then put one half of a flyer in their pocket and then mix the rest up pass left pass right etc and eventually you were left with one half which then matched the half you had in your pocket?

On Tonight at the London Palladium on ITV3 over the weekend, about 2/3rds of the way in, Ben did this exact routine. It's still available to view on ITV Hub so if you're quick you can see the routine in all its glory step by step

A colleague lent me their copy of A Book in English and I see the Woody Aragon's handling is based on being lucky in love, seeking your 'other half', she loves me she loves me not etc so it seems appropriate to suggest that anyone with Valentine's gigs might want to tailor the routine to suit? Four typical love/romance/partnership images are easy enough to find via Google so, for the cost of running off some copies plus the envelopes, you'd have a rather nice and suitable routine this year! Bearing mind the equality of gender these days perhaps best not to use typical Male/Female images but focus on the hearts, flowers, chocolates, cupid and his arrow which are more neutral and less likely to raise issues. Failing that how about images of Romeo and Juliette, Posh and Becks? OK how about Ron and Hermione, Harry and Ginny from Harry Potter, Jack and Rose from Titanic, or indeed any recognisable characters from TV programmes and films?

I tried the effect with scanned copies of playing cards (I'm too cheap to use the real things!) on Mrs.M, she thought it was great and immediately said it ought to be done as a Valentine's Day routine.

Someone who prefers to remain anonymous (!) has just PM'd me to suggest that you could use pictures of those two iconic couples - Micky and Minnie Mouse and Donald and Daisy Duck! As long as the Disney Corp doesn't object it seems like a good idea!
