£! Coins changing.....

Postby Mandrake » Nov 8th, '16, 15:15

On MSN today:

It has been announced our pound coin is changing. The new coin has 12 sides, will be made of two metals and is thought to be the most secure coin in the world.
The reverse side of the coin - the tails - shows the English rose, the Welsh leek, the Scottish thistle and the Northern Irish shamrock emerging from one stem within a royal coronet. It is the first replacement in over in thirty years and will start being circulated in March 2017. By Autumn next year, you won’t be able to use the old coin in shops.

There will be 1.5 billion new coins produced, and the new coins will hopefully reduce the damaging costs caused by counterfeits.

I think the section in the middle will make it easier for say a coin unique as there is a natural break. I suppose it depends on the actual size of it

The current £2 C.U. takes advantage of this feature

Does anyone know if the new design will have any implications on future gimmicks? I have a C.U. which I don't use but a £1 magnetic one which I do regularly.

Most of the current UK coins have a steel core which might mean that the new £1 will also have one. Sadly it will also mean most people will know this and thus screw thing up somewhat.

Just looking at the bright side, even though we stopped using old English pennies back in February 1971, a lot of effects like Scotch and Soda still use them and folks in other countries seem to accept them as, well, just coins - a bit like we accept Chinese coins even if they're not really coins but specially made for an effect.

Perhaps we could use the story that the real reason why the £1 coins changed was because the old ones had very unusual properties, let me show you a little something....

I've got a bunch of old Victorian pennies that I always use my coin work no body ever questions them. I think you'll be good with the round pounds for a good while.

I showed my youngest son this the other day, he can't wait for them to come out

For some reason he likes to collect coins, mostly mine

He has a number of 50p coins with the different backs and things like that

Well, the new coin has been out for a week or so and apparently some of them are falling apart - the insert seems to be loose on a small quantity of them due to a manufacturing defect of some sort!

Already there are 'Unique' versions on sale, I recently had one from Alakazam ( It just goes to show that only an idiot or a magician would pay over £30 for a £1 coin..... ) and I can confirm that the quality is excellent, the two colours of metal are not a problem.

Not a problem, a 1p coin is larger than the insert and has been catered for very well indeed.

I use a magnetic £1 for Sixth Sense so hopefully one will be following pretty quickly with any luck.
