Checking my What's On TV listings magazine (other listings magazines are available :D ), I see that Channel 5 are showing Paul Daniels: My Life in Magic on Friday October 20th at 10.00PM. The blurb is:

"During the 1980s and early 1990s, Paul Daniels was one of the most famous entertainers in the UK. This programme looks back on the star's life and career, from how he started performing magic aged 12, through to his TV debut on Opportunity Knocks in 1970 and ensuing success, and revisits some of his best loved tricks with never before seen archive footage."

and

"One off documentary revisiting the highlights of Paul Daniels' decades long career as a TV magician via interviews with his friends, family, contemporaries, and admirers including Stephen Mulhern, Penn and Teller, and David Copperfield."

Set those Skyboxes or whatever gizmos you folks use these days!

I suspect that, as is usual with TV documentaries, it'll be mostly talking heads and ad breaks.

We could be wrong but I fear you may be right Barry, lot's of 'celebs' wittering on about Paul's stuff. Far better to just show him in action methinks!

Sadly, I also see that C5 are following this with TV's 50 Best Magic Tricks. By my reckoning it's about the 367th time its been shown.... this year... so far... :(

Three years on already, Paul would have been 80 this year.

I remember the very first time I saw Paul Daniels perform. It was at a club in Blackpool. He wasn't quite as famous then and I had no idea what he looked like. However, he was at that time rising in his career and I had heard of him.

I was waiting for him to go on and while waiting I noticed a waiter going on to the cabaret floor to set up his props for the show. I remember thinking it was a nice touch rather than him having to come on in front of everyone before the show to do this himself. There were quite a lot of waiters in uniform serving drinks so I was quite impressed that he managed to take advantage of the fact. Nobody seemed to take any notice of the waiter setting up the props except me because obviously I was interested in magic while nobody else particularly was.

And then he was introduced and came on stage to do his act. I got a bit of shock when I realised that he WAS the "waiter" who came on to set up the props! He must simply have borrowed a jacket from one of the waiters so he could come on the floor unnoticed to set up.

I don't remember much of the act but I certainly remembered that! A very good idea indeed!

Crikey, it's five years since Paul died - time certainly shoots past.
