What is this Fred Kaps one-handed cut?

Postby Tap » Oct 7th, '17, 17:08

At this YT video:

https://youtu.be/tveHNlIUpBk?t=172

(I made it start at the cut routine)

As you can see, he is cutting very fast, and the video is poor. I cannot find a high enough quality video to slow down and see the moves of this cut.

Does it have a name? Is there a video/explanation that covers the moves?

The method of a card cut in the open should not raise any alarms, I hope, as it is not technically 'magic', but rather a display of practice and dexterity.

Thanks!

It looks like the Charlier Cut, but done much better than I do it :-)

John,

Thank you so much for writing. I am familiar with the Charlier (and a few variations!), and for sure there are elements of it there. But I can see him taking a packet in the crotch of the thumb and rotating it away from him at one point, and even holding the 'farthest' packet between 3 fingers, then bringing it back as well. I was hoping to see someone do the exact same cut (which it looks from this and other videos that he just repeats a few times), but no such luck. Either you find 'classic' 3-way cuts based on Prof. Charlier's move, or cardistry.

I've been messing with false-cut Charlers since seeing "Fred"'s cuts-even making a few videos-but I can't get anywhere close. He passed way, way too soon, and I really want to get this part of his routine down as a sort of tribute/remembrance. Finding that it (the cut) is not easily identified/reproduced, I want to discover it even more.

"Fred" can be seen doing this fancy cut as a part of this routine in several videos, but I just can't find one good enough to slow down & see each step.

Thanks again!

It looks like a combination of the swe one handed shift and charlier cut. It starts with the first cut of swe, then he does a charlier before finishing off the swe one handed shift.

I can see the problem. With old films, the frame rate was around 24 frame per second, so with something done at speed, much of it occurs in-between frames. There is no way of retrieving it, no matter how much you slow it down. The same effect exists with modern video to some extent. I wrote a post on this a few months ago.

It looks like the standard pass but with one hand missing! I have actually done it myself for no particular reason on occasion but not before the public and nowhere near as fast as Fred Kaps!

Some of the moves Ekat uses seem similiar to the Fred Caps moves you are looking at.
She has quite a few video's on her Chanel of card flourishes. May want to have a look.

Hahahah! :)

I would love to know the order of moves... I'm not familiar enough what he is doing ni which order from the fast video to break it down.

Thanks, bmat! I've been watching/supporting her for a while-more to support women in magic than cardistry. I want to show in my small way (subs/likes) that there is interest in equality in magic, too. A woman can today be a big fish in a small pond very easily, and I love the art that welcomes and promotes this.

As for the topic, I took your sage advice and 'messaged' her, but as a busy mom I'm not holding my breath for a response! :)

Thanks again!
