Hello all at TM, does anyone do this? Or any nice variations of this. I just assumed that people knew this but i have a couple of my friends that have never seen it

I think most people in the know, would have seen this before, or at least know how it's done.
However, I'd guess that most laymen would probably not have seen this and it'll probably kill them .... the only downside is it's best not to video it - too easy for people to rewind to their heart's content and work out what's going on.

If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??

Absolutely it's an old trick that i would imagine 99% of magicians will if seen. I've had people watch it multiple times still not figure it out haha

Just had another thought about this and another downside to this, is if you're showing it to more than one person at a time.
You ask someone to think of one of the cards, but another spec may also think of a card .... and if they both pick different cards .... and they both disappear, even though you only remove one card .... requires good audience management to prevent this from happening.
I still like it though :)

There are now a few versions, but I don't remember the names of any of them. I think either Copperfield or Doug Henning did this on TV many moons ago. Still a brilliant trick.

Derren Brown started one of his early TV shows with it.

There are variations allowing you to achieve a similar effect by different methods. For example, there's one in Magic Page by Page, and another (Hardin) in Encyclopaedia of Card Tricks.

This.

The Princess Card Trick can be a surprising fooler, but it's extremely risky performing to more than one person.

You just need two spectators to mention what their card was, and if they made different selections, it will immediately dawn on them that more than one card from the original display has disappeared.

But for a quick effect shown to an individual, it's definitely something that you can pull off, and can create genuine surprise.

While I don't have it in my show at the moment, hearing other peoples experience performing it, some people will figure it out right away, while for others you can do it again and again all day long without any issue.

John Carey has a lovely little twist on this classic effect which he calls "Princess In My Pocket".

Blessings on thee, little man
Barefoot Boy with cheeks of tan...
Outward sunshine; Inward joy,
Blessings on thee, Barefoot Boy!
