MAGIC TIMES AHEAD AS SOUTH TYNESIDE CONVENTION RETURNS…

SOME of the world’s leading magicians are heading to South Shields this spring for the 15th South Tyneside International Magic Festival.

For four days from Thursday 15 to Sunday 18 March 2018, the Customs House will be celebrating all things magic as the annual event returns.

Organisers are conjuring up what is set to be the biggest event to date, featuring a family magic performance, two gala shows and a three day convention where professionals and ardent magic fans can hone their skills with question and answer sessions, demonstrations, lectures and masterclasses.

This year’s line-up includes three Spanish magicians, one from Sweden and a number of British favourites, including the welcome return of Mark James and R Paul Wilson, who both appeared at last year’s convention.

Among the other magicians taking part in the gala performances is emerging star James Phelan.

The nephew of the late Paul Daniels, James has risen to prominence over the last 12 months thanks to his unique prank-based magic shows where no-one in the audience is safe.

The 15th annual STIMF has been organised by South Tyneside Council and magician Steve Gore of West Yorkshire, who returns as booker for the second year in succession.

“Last year was my first STIMF event and I’m delighted to be back again,” said Steve. “It’s regarded as one of the most important on the UK’s magic calendar, and regularly attracts magic fans from across Europe and beyond.

“We’ve been working hard behind the scenes for quite a while now to secure some of the world’s finest magicians, who will be sharing some of their tricks of the trade with budding stars of the future.”

Magicians wishing to attend the convention can book their places now. Tickets cost £65 and are available to purchase online via the website: http://www.southtyneside.gov.uk/magicfestival

STILL TIME TO BOOK FOR LEADING MAGIC CONVENTION…

A NOT-TO-BE missed line up will ensure that magic professionals can come face to face with a range of top performers at this year’s South Tyneside International Magic Festival

The popular convention (STIMF) will return to South Shields on the North East coast from 15-18 March 2018.

Leading magicians from across the UK and Europe are heading to The Customs House theatre for the 15th annual event, which is aimed at professional magicians and enthusiasts, giving them an opportunity to learn and share best practices in magic.

The weekend will feature exclusive performances from a host of leading magicians and illusionists, a dealer’s showcase, discussion sessions, talks and more.

Spanish favourites Javi Benitez, Woody Aragon and Juan Luis Rubiales will be joined by a selection of top British acts including James Phelan, Andrew Green and Tom Stone.

Ahead of the weekend will be a Thursday night masterclass (an extra fee applies) and the main event will get underway on Friday 16, with three packed days of workshops and public performances.

The 15th annual STIMF has been organised by South Tyneside Council and magician Steve Gore of West Yorkshire, who is responsible for booking the acts once again after his successful debut in 2017.

“This convention has long been regarded as one of the most important on the UK’s magic calendar, and I am proud to be involved again,” he said.

“It has become renowned as the place to go if you’re looking to learn from the best, and we have been working hard to secure a top line up of magicians who can intrigue and aspire budding magicians and professionals alike.

“It’s not unusual for the South Tyneside International Magic Festival to attract delegates from all over the world, and with this year’s line up, I expect tickets are going to fly.

“I’d advise anyone considering attending this year’s event to book as soon as possible, so that they don’t miss out.”

STEVE KEEPS IT IN THE FAMILY WITH BRAND NEW MAGIC ACT…

THE man in charge of choosing the acts for this year’s South Tyneside International Magic Festival (STIMF) will unleash a brand new act on this year’s audience – starring his own family.

Booker Steve Gore, himself a well-respected magician, will take to the stage at The Customs House, South Shields with his wife, Victoria and daughters Deanna, 12, and Jenna, nine.

The family act – known as Genetics – will appear in a gala show on Saturday 17 March to showcase a brand new trick for the first time.

“I wanted to create a really original illusion act using an ordinary family with extraordinary powers,” he said. “But it doesn’t use any of the usual magic boxes that illusionists use.

“Instead, it is set in a typical household and has the family sitting on the sofa watching TV, performing illusions with the TV, vacuum cleaner and ironing board. Household objects float, wires get cut and restored and children are levitating all over the place.”

Steve has worked as a professional magician for more than 25 years, and has invented tricks and magic acts with leading magicians across the world, including Dynamo and David Blaine, and recently performed 21 shows at the world famous Magic Castle in Hollywood.

He met wife Victoria when they were both performing in a musical in their home town of Bradford, West Yorkshire, 23 years ago.

Both Deanna and Jenna have been performing magic since they were just two years old, and Deanna has previously performed at the Stars of Tomorrow show at the Society of American Magicians convention at Philadelphia.

“It’s exciting that we will be all performing together, and I’m thrilled to be doing it here at South Tyneside this year, which will be my second year as booker,” he added.

“My wife, Victoria, works as an optician when she’s not involved in my shows, and we often joke that if you cross an optician with a magician you get an optical illusion – and that’s exactly what the audience will see.”

Now in its 15th year, the annual festival is run by South Tyneside Council, in partnership with The Customs House and Magicbox and supported by BBC Radio Newcastle.

Councillor Alan Kerr, Deputy Leader of South Tyneside Council with responsibility for Culture and Leisure, is looking forward to seeing the Gore family in action.

“I met Steve last year when he was here, and I was very interested in seeing him perform,” he said. “It’s great news that this time he’s decided to bring the whole family with him.

“To have magicians of Steve’s calibre choosing the South Tyneside International Magic Festival to showcase their new tricks shows what a big event this is, and I think performing with his wife and daughters is a lovely touch.

“I can’t wait to see Steve and all of this year’s acts in action at The Customs House, and I’m sure the audiences are going to be dazzled by the standard of magic on stage.”

Two public gala performances will be held on Friday and Saturday March 16 and 17, with tickets are available now, priced at £14 (£13 concessions).

To book, call the box office on 0191 454 1234 and for more information about the event plus the full line up, visit: http://www.southtyneside.gov.uk/magicfestival"

MIXED UP GIFT SENDS MAGICIAN DOWN HIS CAREER PATH….

A LEADING magician who will be heading north next month has revealed that a mix up with a Christmas gift was the launch of his career.

Philip Partridge, aka Magic Philip, has performed for everyone from HRH the Prince of Wales to Brooklyn Beckham and will now be joining the line up at this year’s South Tyneside International Magic Festival.

The performer revealed that his interest in magic started when he was a child, following him receiving a present that was meant for someone else.

“My aunt and uncle sent Christmas presents for my brother and I and he was supposed to get the magic set and I was supposed to get some kind of airport game,” he revealed.

“But my mum rewrapped them and mixed them up and I got the magic set – and never looked back.”

Philip will be giving a lecture during the convention which runs alongside the public magic shows, where professionals and other enthusiasts will watch him perform in front of an invited audience from local schools.

His performance will give his fellow magicians the opportunity to see how he has become so successful in children’s magic and how he interacts with a young audience.

Although originally trained as a pharmacist, Philip gave up his job at the famous Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Manchester to pursue a full-time career in magic.

It was a gamble which paid off, with Magic Philip constantly being booked for high profile parties, including one of Brooklyn Beckham’s birthday celebrations.

As well as the Magic Philip character, the magician also performs for adult audiences and had made a number of tv appearances on shows ranging from BBC’s The Weakest Link to ITV’s I’d Do Anything.

And he’s particularly looking forward to appearing in South Tyneside.

“I’ve been to the convention as a delegate a couple of times so it’s fantastic to be invited back to present to the other magicians,” he said.

“It’s such a highly regarded event on the magic calendar and I can’t wait.”

Councillor Alan Kerr, Deputy Leader of South Tyneside Council with responsibility for Culture and Leisure said it was great to welcome Philip back to the event.

“It’s fantastic that someone who has attended as a delegate can now come back as a performer and can share his expertise with his fellow magicians,” he said.

The South Tyneside International Magic Festival, which is organised by South Tyneside Council, is now in its 15th year and runs from 15 – 18 March, in partnership with The Customs House and Magicbox.

Along with the Family Magic Extravaganza on 15 March there are two public gala performances at The Customs House on 16 and 17 March, featuring a whole host of top acts.

Bookings can be made via the theatre box office on 0191 454 1234. The full line up and further details are available at http://www.southtyneside.gov.uk/magicfestival".

This is the best small convention in the UK (in my opionion) limited to 150 delegates.
Great lectures and unlike Blackpool you get to chat will all the delegates, lecturers, performers during the breaks.
There are two evening gala shows and a special midnight magician-only cabaret, plus lots of socialising until the small hours in the convention hotel bar.
