Tequila Hustler by Mark Elsdon

The Effect

The Blurb:

Still using electronics for coin in hand? Think again!

Mark Elsdon’s Tequila Hustler is THE game changer.
•No electronics, no gimmicks, no prep.
•Any currency, any language, anywhere, any time.
•Perform in person, over the phone or even Skype.
•100% accuracy guaranteed!

Mark initially shared this with only three other performers: Colin McLeod, Michael Murray and Peter Turner. Not only did they love it, all three immediately developed their own handlings and presentations, which are all fully explained in the Tequila Hustler booklet.

Some unsolicited reviews:

"I just read "Tequila Hustler". It is by far the very best method using the liar/truth theme. Very, very clever!!" - Jean-Jaques Sanvert

"I very rarely praise anything... as I think too many times things are hyped, over priced and many times add nothing to move a plot forward, but thankfully, to me TH was well worth it and I'm glad I purchased it. As someone else said... I will use this for the rest of my life." - Steve Haynes

"This is really brilliant, and I do not like to hype things. So, it is no hype from my side." - Jan Forster

"If you liked Marks CAM books then you will love this. It's the best thing he's released for years (and he's released some good stuff!) It's just brilliant how simple it is to do and the thinking in this booklet really is worth so much more than its price. After using this last night I absolutely love it and will use it forever." - Sean Giles

"I sometimes see posts along the lines of "I wish he didn't release this as I want it all to myself" and I just thought of them as advertising hype from a stooged friend. Not any more. I really wish this was kept under wraps." - Stephen Young

Cost

Approx 36 pages, in either PDF or booklet format:

PDF - £16.99
Booklet: £19.99 (+ £1.25 p&p)

If you buy this from mindfx, there's a secret facebook page that, after purchase, you can ask Michael Murray to add you to, where you can openly discuss additional thoughts and ideas.

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

I'll give this a 2.
No sleights, but does need some presentational skills. It's fairly easy, as the questions do all the work for you, so you can concentrate 100% on your presentation.

Review

This is basically a "coin in hand" routine .....

BUT:

No gimmicks, no electronics, no prep, no stooges ... absolutely nothing else in play except you, your spec(s) and a coin (which can be borrowed from the spec).
Perform it face to face, or even over the phone.
No angle issues - pretty obvious as there are no gimmicks, but I thought I'd mention it anyway :)

You invite a spec to play a game with you (can't reveal the exact details), but basically, they hide a coin in either hand. They bring their hands out (or they can keep them behind their back) and you ask them a VERY simple question regarding the location of the coin. They reply and you look into their eyes as you try and decide whether they are lying or not. You ask them to place their hands back behind their back and give them the option of switching hands if they wish (no force/equivoque .... etc), they have a 100% free choice whether they wish to switch hands or not. you then ask them another VERY simple question again, regarding the location of the coin. You look into their eyes, read their body language, look at how their hands are gripped, etc .... and you reveal the location of the coin with 100% accuracy.
No awkward questions - you ask 2 simple questions, which you would probably ask anyway, if you were playing this game. The spec either lies or tells the truth - it's up to the performer to try and work it out, but the performer gets it right EVERY time :)

When I first got this and read it, my initial thought was, "is that it?? How the hell does that work??"
The "solution" is so simple .... so elegant .... it's CRIMINAL.
A child could do this .... it's that simple.
The trick to this is, you need to present this as a feat of mentalism. If you simply ask the questions and tell them where the coin is, it won't be that impressive and you may get caught out by the odd over-zealous spec.
However, f you ham it up and reckon on to read every word they say, every move they make, spot every nuance, note every twitch, watch their hands to see if one is slightly higher than the other and maybe gripping tighter than the other .... you get the drift??

There are also bonus contributions from Colin McLeod, Pete Turner and Michael Murray.
I can't, however, discuss these as it will involve discussing the routine itself :(

Overall

9/10

I LOVE this. I only got this a week or so ago - performed it last weekend in my local pub and everyone was trying to work out how I was "reading" them. Performed it to 4 people at once and invited everyone to try and work out where the other specs had hidden their coins, whilst I made my predictions beforehand on a slip of paper (no swami, nail writer, gimmicks, etc). This might only be a "which coin in hand" routine, but in the right hands - this fries minds.

If you're hovering over the "add to cart" button and you're like I was, thinking to yourself, "this is prob one of those ads that is misleading" (and let's admit, we've seen plenty of them) .... and prob thinking, "this is too good to be true" .... let me assure you - it's not. What you read is what you get .... just remember, this is not to be presented as a "trick" .... present it as an act of mentalism;mind reading; body language reading .... and you're onto a winner.

What are you waiting for ..... "add to cart" now.

QUESTION:
If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??

Tequila Hustle is a great effect it just works with no gimmicks. Just ask them a couple of questions and the logical process means you will know which hand has the coin.
This technique has been developed further in a book called V2 by Manos Kartsakis. In this variation you only need to ask one question !!!

"who? no I dont know him", Derren Brown
"no idea who he is !", Kenton Knepper
"Is he a magician ?", Penn&Teller
