clothes prediction effects

Postby thetribeofBen » Nov 7th, '13, 00:33

Hey there all, im sorry if this is duplicated somewhere, but i need your assistance in locating an effect that i have seen performed in different ways over the last few month by both Ben earl in trick artist and more recently a similar effect by Ben hanlin in tricked.

The outward effect is that either a spectator draws clothes on a picture in different colours and it is shown that the performer has been wearing these identically coloured clothes under his normal clothes all along (as with Ben earl) or that a spectator is asked to randomly choose some clothes and the performer is wearing these under his normal clothes.

Please help if you have box alter as to where i can learn there techniques or whether there is an actual effect that i can purchase as i really like the concept, especially where the spec draws clothes on a stick man.

Cheers,

Ben.

I'm not sure that this is a published effect or not but there are certainly a few ways that this could be done. I'd probably suggest looking at some basic books on mentalism, perhaps look at prediction effects and see if you can work out a way to do it.

Thanks for your reply, i have researched into using mentalism techniques that could accomplish this effect, such as suggestion techniques and equivocal spectator management, but ive not really come up with anything suitable, ive even thought about the possibility of there being multiple outs for the routine where the audience member draws the coloured clothes on the stick man drawing (as in having a few different items of closing on and only taking off certain layers depending on what is drawn)

Ill keep looking into it myself and if anyone else has any clue boot these sorts of routines, i would be very grateful for the advise, even suggestions of mentalism books that might be helpful.

Thanks again!

Ben.

Thanks Nathan, that's really helpful, i didn't think it would be anything to do promystic, but it makes sense, and it is a tad expensive, but the items effectively pay for themselves with performances, ill defiantly be looking into getting some bits and bobs from promystic and aiming towards obtaining these items eventually.
Cheers again.

I don't really want to expose anything but there are a few different ways that this could be done using basic mentalism techniques and no need for expensive props or gimmicks. Look as some of the basic books and I'm sure that you'll find something. Remember, there are two different types of predictions, ones where you know the result beforehand and ones where you don't. It's also worth remembering that things often aren't quite as clean or fair as they may seem or you may remember them.

Grab yourself a copy of Get Nyman, I know there's and effect on there that could easily be tweaked for what you want, plus it also tips one of the methods that I'm thinking of.

450.00! Hats off to the seller if he sold one. I've not read Nyman's book, but the concepts are in most books in mentalism. You just have to understand them and then apply them. Even if the only one out there was 450.00 and you had to go that route. I've seen plenty of people perform this, including I believe Copperfield himself, (but it could have been another) and I've seen it on the Ellen show and I've seen it live and it never gets a 450.00 reaction. And while I always say that it is all about presentation I have to admit there is a lot better out there for a lot less.

Just so im being clear, im not under the impression that the effect can only be achieved through expensive gimmicks, i mean that the items sold by promystic are brilliant and i intend to persue buying some of the bits and bobs someday, but just so that its known i do realise that by using certain techniques and equivoque you could effectively perform the same effect and ive even tried out a little idea where the spectator draws clothes on a picture and you show that you have the rammed colour clothes drawn on your picture, like in one of the demo vids on the promystic website, but through spectator management, a few carefully chosen sentences and magicians choice and in sure this could be applied to actually wearing those colour clothes, but i was interested in whether the marketed effect was out there to purchase, as im a bit lazy!

Thanks for everyone's help so far, i welcome any more input that people might have to offer.

Ben.

Ben Earl's trick is pretty much an altered version of the effect Lady of Mystery is thinking of. The method is the same (to be precise, part of the method is exactly the same and, I suspect, the other part was the same too, but could have been done in a much more expensive way - it is impossible to know for certain), but the presentation is totally different. If they did do it the expensive way it must have been to get some cool stuff out of the production company!

A word of warning, though: The method for this trick might not suit you at all. I cannot say more without tipping the method and, as I have huge respect for Andy Nyman, I am not going to do that.

Thanks part timer, im going to get myself a copy of get nyman, i did a little research and found the effect that you are both referring to and it seems like it might have some potential to alter slightly for my needs, ive got a background in mentalism and have been performing book tests, chair predictions and comedy Q&A for a while, so that is why in interested in resting this particular sort of routine just so you all know (as in im not just a young magician trying to ADD mentalism to my repertoire) i also think it would be a fantastic closer to my first half, maybe even my shows along with the other things i close with!

Sorry, that probably wasn't necessary, but i didn't want anyone thinking i was just another one of those slightly coming teenage lads who just want all the answers spoon fed to them or even one of those people that are just getting into mentalism and are going for intermediate stuff straight away!

Also, although i said i had figured out one way of achieving the routine, its not perfect and still needs work, hence my continuing pursuit of help and advice.

My continuing gratitude to you all.

I know that this topic was started a long time ago and maybe no one cares anymore, but I thought I would post a little update.
I performed a clothes prediction style routine for a while using some basic mentalism techniques and had a lot of success, however i eventually purchased a chinese 'knock off' version of the effect created by Promystic, and it worked well and allowed me to concentrate purely on presentation whilst getting the most amazing reactions, but eventually the prop became faulty and I moved on to looking into purchasing the professional version created by Promystic and I have to say it is leaps and bounds ahead of the other versions and incredibly well made, it is fairer in how you present it and how the spectator handles the equipment, but more importantly, it creates standing ovations and can be a reputation making routine.
The equipment (without going into detail) can be used for so much more and the routines are almost only limited by your imagination, whereas the Chinese knock off was a one trick pony and a little limiting! I didn't pay full price for the promystic color match, but it is worth the full price due to it basically paying for itself with the repeat bookings it gets you and new customers booking you after seeing the effect.
