Best videos for beginners getting into card magic?

Postby EndersGame » Apr 22nd, '19, 04:32

I have a number of videos myself, and am writing an article about this topic. I'm curious to hear what people are recommending nowadays as their top choices for a complete beginner getting into card magic?

So if someone is a newbie who wants to learn some basic fundamentals/sleights plus some tricks, what video/DVD would you recommend they purchase?

I'm not a cardie but the usual recommendation is Royal Road To Card Magic, not the cheapo versions but probably the one by R.Paul Wilson.

And are any videos by Ellusionist worth mentioning here? (e.g. Crash Course in Sleight of Hand Card Tricks, or How To Do Miracle Card Tricks)

I really think that if you want to be a good magician then you need to study books rather than videos. Or at the very least if you cannot tear yourself away from videos then combine it with books. There are things you can learn from books that you will never find on videos such as presentation, psychology and showmanship. One of the problems with videos is that there is a tendency to copy the style of the presenter and that can be a very bad thing indeed.

Great comments Mark, and I wholehearted agree with them.

I think it's important to study books along with videos. My article will cover both, and I already have a very strong list of books I'll be recommending :)

I agree with Mandrake's recommendation of the Royal Road to Card Magic ..... and yea, make sure it's the 5 DVD version by R. P. Wilson; not the inferior 4 DVD set.

Also, Born to Perform by Oz Pearlman is a good one. If I remember correctly, I think this was my first "magic DVD" that I bought :)

If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??

With regard to the Royal Road to Card Magic I am presently writing an annotated version and am up to the last chapter. There are sill illustrations to be done and a certain amount of editing and book production. I will announce to the world in my normal low profile manner when the job is done.

I've never been keen on Royal Road. I prefer Walter Gibson's Complete Illustrated Book if you can find a copy. I started with his What's New in Magic which gives detailed instructions for the Hindu shuffle and the Charlier Pass.

A complete beginner could also consider Encyclopaedia of Card Tricks for non-sleight card magic.

50 % of my performing repertoire with cards comes from the Royal Road to Card Magic. The advantage of the book is that it teaches you how to be a good magician through a well thought out study plan. You start at the beginning of the book and work your way slowly until the end. And one great thing the book has above most others is that it teaches you how to PRESENT your magic rather than to just "do it".
