Royal Road to Card Magic annotations

Postby mark lewis » Jul 8th, '19, 06:38

Some of you will know that I have been working on an annotated version of the Royal Road to Card Magic. I wish to inform the multitude that the actual writing of the first draft has now been completed after several months. . It will still be quite some time before the book sees publication since there is still a lot of work to be done with editing, proofreading, illustrations and other activities. However, at least the text has finally been written.

This book has been my Bible for decades and I would say that 50% of my performing repertoire comes from this book. Over the years I have developed and evolved improvements and different handlings to the material. When the book is finally put into print I shall announce it to one and all in my usual low profile manner.

You can read the very last annotation in the book right here. There. Don't say I don't give you anything!

First you remove a card at random and place it openly in your trouser pocket without showing it to the audience. You tell them, however, that they can see it later. Shuffle the deck and show the bottom card to one person only. You do this in such a way that nobody else can see this card except your assistant. You now appear to put this card face down on the table but in reality you glide (Chapter Four) the card and place the card above it on the table.
Overhand shuffle retaining the card on the bottom as explained in Chapter One. Approach a second spectator and repeat the same procedure. He looks at the bottom card after which you glide it and place another card on the table. Again you make sure that he is the only one who sees the card.
Repeat this entire procedure from start to finish with one more onlooker. The position now is that everyone has seen a card and thinks their looked at card is on the table. They are not aware that everyone has looked at the same card.
You now ask that on the count of three everyone should name their card. While explaining this you overhand shuffle the bottom card to the top of the pack as explained in Chapter one. They all name their card and find to their surprise they have all looked at the same card. The second surprise is that when the tabled cards are turned over they prove to be indifferent cards. The third surprise is that while under cover of the consternation you palm the top card and produce it from your pocket explaining that everything was a figment of the imagination since you put their sighted card in your pocket before you started!
