I was joking about the grass thing !!!
Notice how the rules have had to be re-enforced here...
It's a good thing.... I was guilty as charged, without even considering the wrong side of what I was doing (re-selling DVDs which I could have already gleened knowledge from, and then passing on).
It's an uncertain thing, this trading malarky. After reading Laurence's email about such things, it brings it home how someone desperate enough could well abuse the system...
I've developed a lot of routines myself, which I've put lots of hard work into... and although I've never sold them, I'd be pretty messed-off if someone 'copied' my routines for capital gain.
The guys who are out there making money out of other peoples ideas are getting away with it... and I think they'll always do it.
For instance - I've offered my services as an NTSC to PAL conversion service, for anyone who's had NTSC video's which they can't use. I mentioned specifically Derren Brown's Devil's Picturebook video - which I own, and yet you'd be surprised how many people asked me to 'bootleg' them a copy - the cheek!
Part of my everyday work as a designer is copyrighting (c) my intellectual property - whether it be a logo, a brochure, a photograph etc. to try and stop people using it commercially for their own gain.
We call it leeching at work - and that's what it is. I guess that a natural part of me being a creative-type is the strong resentment of leechers, with me being especially protective of my own work.
I hope this makes some sense to all you freeloaders out there...
