Pen Penetration - Review

Postby magicman222 » Sep 15th, '03, 02:49

Pen Penetration

Difficulty: 2, Pretty easy but a bit of practice would be in order

Examinable: Both are examinable after the effect. the bills is theres. The pen can sign the bill at the start.

Review: I really like this effect. it is a lot better than any of the other ones. you can even hear the rip with this one. the pen penetrates 1 and a half inches. the bill can even be signed with the same pen. NO SWITCHES

Overall: 9.5 out of 10 . Worth every penny

there's always a switch..if someone makes a pen through dollar with no switches at all,the trick just resets after the effect with no ditching or misdirection then let me know,i'll buy it and teach my kids how to do it

I actually own 3 clean pen-thru effects, and they all require no switches - and hold up to scrutiny both before and after.

Check with the retailers - they're one of the most popular items sold.

Or, is this a sarcastic attempt at irony???!?!?!?!

Hmmm....

Pen penetration

Postby archimage » Apr 24th, '06, 20:46

I just bought a pen penetration trick last week and began performing with it this weekend and today at work. So far it has been a fantastic trick. Although the one I have is gimmicked and can only be inspected after the performance and I have to ditch the gimmick. I would be interested in obtaining a pen penetration that can be inspected before AND after the performance with no switches.

I just bought Sankey's Dough, where a pen penetrates a dollar bill and post-it note. When removed the post it still has the hole, but the dollar bill is restored. It should be at my door when I get home today. Hopefully, it will be this type of trick. I have yet to be disappointed by any of Sankey's products. I'm very excited. Anyway, let me know where to find these other penetration tricks that do not require switches and can be examined.

All the pen thrus (i thought) have a sot of gimmick, can easily be ditched and inspected before and after effect. Dough is amazing, really, it is. It's better than some pen thrus and such a clever idea :D you'l lse what I'm talkin bout whe it comes :D

Personally I found dough a bit fiddly...

I think 'misled' takes some beating for pen/pencil penetrations (link below)

I quite like Dough, but I find it somewhat fiddly to do smoothly.

For another idea in the same vein, Alan Rorrison has two ungimmicked effects "Misleading Misled", and "Real Penetration", available at http://www.alanrorrison.tk/

I have perfect pentration and found someone that supplies it for £6. I have never performed a pen thru that uses a switch.

Is there a Pen thru on the market that utilises a switch? I certainly can't think of one and I know at least 4 methods.

Sharpie through anything utilises a switch, but it's really easy to do on the offbeat. I usually perform this one right before Ambitious. Have them sign the card, take the pen from them and ask them to shake the card to dry the ink. On this offbeat, the switch is made. I ask if they noticed anything weird about the card or the pen, then perform. Blows people away...

Yeah, Dough can be a bit of a fiddle, but when done absolutely right it looks soooo good. I am a huge Sankey fan!

While this seems an attractive feature to magicians who know the trick, I'd say offering the pen for examination before the effect is performed simply points to the method and puts the heat where it doesn't belong.
Anyway, any of the more recent crop of cheap versions of this trick can be inspected before or after - not that you won't have to do a tiny bit of work, and again I'd say you're proving too much.
John Cornelius's original "Pen Through Anything" required a switch for examination, his "Perfect Pen" had a self-contained gimmick which allowed for examination and a better visual effect, and the current ripoffs have simplified and to my way of thinking improved the trick. Having bought several of John's originals, I feel OK using the cheaper alternatives.

I've found that the pen through bank notes to get the best reactions from specs rather than pen through other objects. Perhaps it's the fact that the note can be borrowed and signed with the pen as stated, whereas for some unknown reason it seems to be much more believeable through a note than a pen through coin.

Anyone else have similar experiences?

Also, I've two pen through effects and neither require a swap, just carefull manipulation of the gimmick (I won't say how).

Pen through money

Postby Brannmanndan » Aug 18th, '08, 17:42

I got this trick in a joke shop and performed it five minutes later to a group of about 15 people. Worked a treat. The hardest part was putting the lid of the pen on the other end, so just try to do it while lewtting the money be examined and then hand out the pen for examination.

I used to have a black plastic version which had one gimmicked and one real pen. The switch was no problem, plenty of misdirection when doing the effect.

But the clip came loose on the gimmicked one and I lost it out of my jacket. I now have a gimmicked pen which is similar to Cornelius's Perfect Pen. It is a chrome finish with an arrow shaped clip which looks like a Parker, and its far better quality, and the gimmick has never been discovered.

But maybe that's because of how I do the trick. I don't hand the pen out before the trick but I do give it to the spectator to initial the note before doing the trick, which is better than handing it out for examination. After all, you wouldn't give the spectator a fake pen, would you.

After the trick, DON'T put it in your pocket, they'll want to examine it in detail. Put it on the table or bar. They will pick it up after examining the note, but will only give it a cursory look. Because you wouldn't have left a fake pen out for examination, would you ?? And yes, for those with the same pen, I do put the top back on before putting it down.

My son has Perfect Penetration and I really do like it, but I don't see the need for two penetrating pens.
