Top Tip - Black Deck Care

Postby leighton » May 17th, '06, 12:54

Has anyone noticed how the black deck cards show little flecks of white apearing sometimes? and when you fan or spread them out the beautifull all black design is flawed by the edges still being white.

Well I just took a perminant black marker pen and painted the edges of all the cards, they look the business now.

Anyone else do this sort of thing to their Black Decks?

Yep, been doing it since day one.

Using a spirit/alcohol based pen is good.

I actually wrote an explanation of this technique in Black[deck]Magic...

It's something I recommend, but NOT on the 'positive' 3 of clubs—the pen will bleed in an unsightly way!

Does it not damage the cards any bit? Like making it fan worse??

Not really, I haven't noticed any change in fanning ability nor any other moves. The cards work just the same, but look a whole load sexier.

Do 1 card at a time very carefully only on the edge.

The only downside I can fore see would be with white backed gaff cards, they would stand out like a sore thumb.

Does the ink not come off on fingers through moisture in hands etc?

On the basis of 10 seconds per card, that would be 520 seconds which is 8 and 2/3 minutes! :D

Look just like my Tigers - can I have them back now :?:

I've never found the ink to be a problem when using a permanent marker

As noted, using permanent in means the ink won't come off on your hands. And, buying a CHISEL tip marker means you can do the deck as a block—much quicker than a card at a time.

Personally, I opt for the 'almost run out pen' mode, and just do broad strokes of the deck.

I have a deck of Tigers which I've been using on and off since 2003 (which I marked up for my BlackDeckMagic effects) and it still goes strong.

Another VERY handy tip for any cards is to KEEP YOUR HANDS CLEAN before performing. I think this has been said before, but it's especially true of cards which you want to keep for best... as I believe the acids and salts in your sweat can have a detrimental effect over time.

black deck marking

Postby archimage » May 19th, '06, 17:14

I usually count out 10 cards a time. mark them, then put them away.

After they dry, I spend some time working with the cards (shuffling, cutting, flourishe) so that any of them that are sticking, become unstuck. I double check to see and bad spots and sometimes have to touch them up a bit. After that they're great for quite a while.
