Double Exposure - Asi Wind

Cost

£7.95 - direct from the web site. (Its billed on the site as about $12, but for those in the UK it works out at about eight quid)

Effect

For those who have seen David Blaine's last special, you might remember this trick as he did it for the Smith family. Although David tweaked the effect a little to make it a little more mental, this is essentially the trick. Spectator selects a card, you mix up the deck into face up and face down cards, they replace the card. You then fan the deck and get them to hold up the fan in front of them, showing a face up and face down mixed deck. You then take a photograph of the messy old fan, close the deck and then show the spectator the photograph. In the photo, the cards are all face down in the fan, except the one they selected.

So basically it's a triumph effect that happens on the spectator's phone.

Difficulty

(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

You'll need to be able to faro shuffle. You'll also need to be able to fan. As such, this isn't really a beginner's trick, but its not out of their reach either. So I'd posit a 3 here.

My Tuppence

Well I was blown away by this trick on the Blaine special. I was very excited to see that it was readily available on line. This trick can be done with a borrowed deck, and a borrowed phone. Let me tell you, that is not a marketing ploy. It truly, genuinely can. As such, this is a powerful old trick to have up your sleeve. Asi teaches two phases to the routine. You can either do a triumph effect (which requires a little more finger work) and then show the spectator the phone, or you can just do the phone thing. It's up to the performer, and the phone effect alone is powerful enough in my opinion. I don't see the point in diluting it. I bought this trick and had it down not half an hour later, so for semi-experienced card people, its really simple.

Video Stuff

As per Dan and Dave stuff, its high quality. They have released this as a streaming online only type deal. As such, you can only watch this when you have internet access. I think its a good move to try and cut down on piracy, so no complaints here. The instruction is a little quick, and those who are not familiar with some of the principles might struggle. It is visually clear though, and the whole thing is broken down into five chapters: performance, performance with commentary, explanation, interview, history and credits. The performance with commentary bit was brilliant, as Asi talks you through everything that is happening including tips on misdirection. One little niggle: the sound on the commentary is a little low and needs to be turned right up to hear it.

Overall

This trick is very powerful, visual, it involves the spectator....and this is the clincher.....they walk away with a souvenir of their experience. To me, that is excellent. To all you professional magicians, that is invaluable. And it can be done with a borrowed deck and phone. Asi is a good teacher, and drops in some splendid tips and advice as you go. Many of you will be performing this in a matter of no time, and I think for the money this is excellent value.

Overall Score: 9/10

This looks great, but my faro isnt great at the moment. Does the faro have to be a perfect one?

No. No it does not. The odd card not separating won't matter.
