Super Sharpie

What they say:

The Effect
Does magic get any more direct than this?

Now you can predict a spectator’s freely thought of name, number, date, age - even the amount of change in their pocket. The list goes on and on - and your reputation will only grow and grow!

All this is possible with the Super Sharpie. The Super Sharpie is a revolutionary redesign of Eric Mason's incredible idea, which has become mentalism's most potent weapon. It's so incredibly simple to use, you’ll be performing mind boggling mental miracles just minutes after practicing with it.

The Super Sharpie can be used as a regular Sharpie - because it is! Feel free to hand it to spectators to sign cards - they’ll never discover its hidden secret.

There’s a built-in precision gimmick that allows you to make sharp, distinct predictions with clarity and legibility. Best of all, you'll do all this right under their noses - while they're staring at you. Since it's all built into the pen, there's no fumbling. You start clean when you pull the pen out, and you end clean when you put the pen away.

It’s self-contained, self-inking and undetectable, and it's always ready to go. You’ll make your predictions on playing cards (even plastic cards), business cards, and virtually anything else that you can write on with a regular a Sharpie pen.

In the 15 minute companion video CD (included), you’ll learn expert technique that will get you up and running with your Super Sharpe immediately. Comes with Super Sharpie, video CD and illustrated instructions.

The Cost - £28.99 from most magic dealers

Difficulty (1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used, 4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)
3 - handling takes a little practise

Review

I actually bought this item over a year ago and forgot all about it. Then I came across it when surfing the web for T inkwriters as I felt not many people use pencils to write with these days. I then remembered it & dug it out. No idea why I had forgotten about it (it was still packaged up).

Anyway, after studying the handling on the CD 3 or 4 times & then using it in real life I have to say it's great. I have used lesser inkwriters before but always worried about the ink running out or getting the gimmick on or off (same with pencilwriters). Now this is solved - getting the gimmick on & off is easy to do at any time & covered by natural handling, you can write a whole page with the gimmick without the ink running out & then as soon as you reconnect it it self inks again & will last as long as the ink in the Sharpie itself. It's also very easy to replace the ink (just buy another ordinary Sharpie and swap the ink over - again the CD shows you how to do this).

The write up & CD does the performance with business cards which is a good way to hand them out but I find using a small notepad better as it's firmer & if you have a stiff cover it can be used to give extra cover by angling it up at 90 degrees.

Obviously the writing itself takes a bit of practise but not a lot. I find that cursive (joined up) writing is easier to do & faster than printing capitals. Numbers are even easier.

Reactions have been great & everyone asks me to do it again so I do the same thing with a different theme (first a straight mindread then on repeat I get them to mindread me - I send them a written number, they tell me the number & I reveal - interestingly they think it's a different effect & think I've influenced them somehow).

Only 1 downside I've discovered is that when in my pocket once the gimmick somehow got knocked off by other stuff in my pocket & I only discovered it a few days later when it had dried out & dried out part of the exposed pen. However after reconnecting the gimmick & having the pen vertical for a day or so everything is back to working order.

Overall

If you want to get away from using pencils & worry about how to get your current writers on & off this solves the problem nicely. A fantastic pen to carry around all the time - just what I've been looking for for a long time. It does take the same practise writing as all these type of writers do & is a lot more costly but it is precision made & should last for ever (as long as you don't lose it of course :!: ). It saves the hassle of replacing pencil leads or the worry of them breaking.

Personally I'd give it 9 out of 10 (it loses a point for cost).

Nice review, thanks.

I've been unsure as to whether or not I should get this - I knew what it was before and it is a bit steep, but I guess you have to judge these things on audience reaction. In theory this could eliminate a lot of other methods of achieving similar things (it won't, of course)...I may get it to use as an out should I be having an off day with my mentalism.

Sounds great, but does seem a little expensive.

i have it, i just never gotten to learning it. i think the gimmick is a little flashy for normal use, but if you take the BLANK off it looks normal. For me, i think the gimmick is hard to get off and i useally end up drawing all over my self... :(

I have one question - I think it's OK if I post it on an open forum but please let me know if it isn't.

Will it work if I bite my nails?

I can't really see how biting your nails would be an issue with the super sharpie
If there's anything specific you wanna ask and you don't really want it in the open for fear of exposure, then PM me

Yes. It's not a nail*****r though it will substitute for one and has the advantage of being a pen not a pencil which looks more normal these days and can be read from further away if you hold it up to a small audience.

It is worth ALL my card tricks.

In fact for the last week I have used ONLY the Super Sharpie and a little Kioku and got massively better reactions, I mean 10 times better, than my best card magic.

A lot is in the presentation - what you say and how you say it. The mechanics themselves can be done in your sleep. In fact I have dropped the necessary piece on the table, picked it up and carried on without getting made. After the trick I always but always try to "reassemble" the pen in full view and have never been caught out once this week. Not once, with 60-70 "readings".

You can't fool all the people all of the time - some get it right away. But 95% don't.

It's the taking off and putting back on that I'm having trouble with. I need a bit more practice I guess...

Watch the DVD that comes with it which shows ver nicely how to get the gimmmick off & on. If you're having trouble getting it off try twisting it slightly as you do it

RESSURECTED POST: the mini super sharpie...are the problems that some have said with the original still applicable to the new mini version?

or is it worth a go now?
