Post counts....

PostPosted: Jun 9th, '07, 21:02

Hey mods, Why not have the posts counted as follows:

>500
>1000

or something like that so that CERTAIN PEOPLE don't just post needless rubbish all the time just for the hell of it.

The content of T.M. now compared to a month ago is going down and I think that is one of the reasons.

Just an idea...

Do we actaully need a post count at all? I understand that it defines our "membership" such as junior, full and so on but it doesn't serve any other purpose does it?

It might just be part of the message board design and therefore has to remain as is.

It's these kids that want 'Senior member' next to their name that are to blame here.
You won't get instant membership to the Magic Circle if you post 1000 times you know...

But still ironic, nobody posts as much as the Kraznermachine. 636 posts in a month, over 20 each and every day... brrrrrrrrrr...

This forum has been hijacked....

it's unfortunate. I am now turned off from logging in because I'll be faced with (as I just was today) 3 pages of "posts since last visit", which was only 3 days ago.

I've been here for a year and I'm sure that plenty of members haven't even heard of me... and that's the way it should be.

There are more posts per day in "the Dove's Head" and "miscellaneous" than anything else. It's quite frustrating. If everyone always wants to talk about things other than magic, then JOIN ANOTHER FORUM!!!!!

I'm not saying the the Dove's Head doesn't have it's place here at TM, but it shouldn't be the focal point of the boards!

...and furthermore I agree the post count could be eliminated; that would be the great equalizer. In every forum, most kids (I'm not discriminating here - just saying that "kids" are the people who join a lot of internet forums and are more used to this kind of thing) want to attain the elite post count level to feel like an authority. New members have instant respect for members with over 1000 posts, without having read any of their posts. That's just the way most forums work - so people want to get there as soon as possible so that newer members will have this respect for THEM and they can sound like authorities.

How many times has it happened that a new member joins and shows less-than-stellar skills and knowledge and is asking for basic material, and then within a few weeks has 500+ posts and is already sounding like an expert in the field? In my opinion far too many times.

Most serious discussions I have these days are over PM or in the secrets area.

Can we have slightly larger in boxes please?

personally I couldn't care less about the post count.

I think it's clear, well in my mind anyway, who speaks sense here and who doesn't.

I haven't got anything to say so I don't speak (and hence my low post count). I just wish that other people on this board adopted the same philosophy.

Two ears, one mouth - so we should use them in that proportion. Unfortunately, it's clear that some members see their ten fingers as more important!!

Do you really need the title underneath your post count, as someone else said before, people will rush to become advanced members or senior members or whatever, just so it makes them look important and not a newbie, I admit I kind of wanted to get passed 50 so I was no longer a junior member or whatever it was.

Some of the titles just don't make sense. It calls me a preffered member but I could have written 150+ posts of rubbish (I hope I didn't!). This should not make me a preffered member. Maybe it would make more sense if it just said under your post count if you had access to the private section of the forum. Someone new would then know who to ask for advice, because if I was new I would think asking someone who is meant to be a 'preffered member' would give me a good answer from someone who is knowlegable in magic, and this may not be the case.

I do like the idea of having meaningful status titles, people who have proven knowledge but who would assign these titles? It's quite a bit of work for the mods and will probabaly cause more trouble, I can see all the arguements now, 'why's he on that status when I'm not' kind of thing.

Now I really like the random, off topic type posts. It makes the whole forum more friendly and sociable. If it was just magic, magic and magic I think I'd soon get bored. That is one reason that I very rarely post on another magic forum. Things don't have to be 100% on topic, all the time. Just keep it sensible.

The content (well, decent content) quota is going down because the forum is falling into disarray.

I was away from last Friday until today, and I cannot believe how much rubbish has accumulated.

We can't attribute it all to the Krasstinator, especially as he's now gotten deity status by appearing in a magazine.

And we can't pin it all on new '2-post phishers' users either, as most of them don't have the braincells between them to form a conversation.

I am not too sure what the solution is, but after sitting this morning and trawling the drivel, I realise that TM has become nothing more than passtime—where as it used to be a passion.

Four years ago, it was a pleasure to log in and hit the 'posts since last visit' button.

Now it's a chore.

In fairness, there's quite a few good members who now seem to be becoming seriously naffed-off with the way things are heading.

Not sure I could class myself as a 'good' member or not, but I know that I personally am finding quite a lot of the recent posts (mainly by the same 3-4 people) to be so tedious that I really balk at logging in some days

hey! I'm actually off here for a while after today...taking a break while i work on other "things"...so your useless post quota might just drop :D
