I have been searching and searching but cannot find a way to automatically view topics with newest post first as a default.

I use the 'messages since last visit' as a guide to look at posts, but these invariably send me to the oldest page for a longer topic.

Am I being particularly dumb?

Can anyone help?

You're using the right list. You just need to click on the little white square next to the name of the last poster (on the far right of each row) to see the most recent post.
