Magic Tao is starting a new type of magician get together, based in Sutton Coldfield in the West Midlands. We’re calling it ‘Tao Magi Meets’ (Magi being Wise Men ). We realised that there isn’t anything like this in the area; where like minded magicians can meet up every couple of weeks and share a session together. We have made a conscious decision not to do this under the banner of being a magic club. We’re actively seeking something different; no presidents, secretaries, fees, initiation ceremonies (oh no, that’s something else completely!) etc. ‘Magi Meets’ will be purely a group of people interested in magic meeting up in a designated Bar, having a social drink combined with the opportunity to ‘play magic’. We see this as a great opportunity for local (or not) magicians to chew the fat and learn from, and share with, each other.

We’ve identified a venue and the first ‘Magi Meet’ will be within the next four weeks; date to be confirmed. We’re looking to appeal to magicians (hobbyist and professional) who are interested in spending time with fellow magicians, going through a trick or routine or two, getting and giving feedback or just chatting about what’s going on in their magic world. From time to time we plan to have the occasional Extra Special ‘Magi Meet’. We have some ideas about what these might be, but it’s still early days. ‘Magi Meets’ will be aimed at experienced magicians so, if you’re new to magic or looking for tuition unfortunately, ‘Magi Meets’ won’t meet your particular needs.

There have been several posts on TM suggesting a Midlands meeting, or asking if there is one, so now the answer is yes there is - watch this space for the details.

What's the reason for not allowing beginners?

Magi Meets’ will be aimed at experienced magicians so, if you’re new to magic or looking for tuition unfortunately, ‘Magi Meets’ won’t meet your particular needs.

Most 'normal' Magic Clubs will cater for beginners but I think the idea for Tao Magi Meets was for it to be for those who already have some knowledge. It's not a case of not wanting beginners, it's just that there won't be anything of help or interest for them. I could be wrong but I believe that's the general idea.

The first meet is on Tusday.

As the meets progress I am sure more and more people will attend and more fun stuff will be happening.

Six of us formed the inaugural meeting, certainly with some apprehension at what would be expected or needed but after the first few minutes all that went out of the window and we got down to the fun stuff of magic, magic and more magic! Costas demoed a couple of routines, one well in advance of commercial release in a few week's time and it's an absolute killer! No doubt he'll tell you more in due course but if you want a truly hands off effect where a card is mentally freely selected and revealed to have been predicted well before the start then this will be the one!

Plenty of card moves and sleights were shown, dissected and tried out, ideas were shared and exchanged and I think we even came up with a totally new effect using coins and coin bags whilst trying to sort out a completely different effect. Coin matrix and other routines were also shown and shared, the accent being on ease and simplicity rather than the knuckle busting finger flinging stuff - although there was a fair amount if that as well - thank you Max, all very impressive stuff!

For a first meeting it was exceptionally good and showed that, like the other regional arrangements, a casual meeting is an excellent way to meet and chew the fat with other magicians, professionals as well as amateurs.

Great venue, plenty of space and the pizza was superb!

So if anyone else in the area is interested in joining a bunch of totally friendly people sharing a common interest in the art then get yourselves over for the next meeting. Details to be advised asap!

Hmmm. If it's fairly easy to get to by train, I might make the next one.

I'm often up in Birmingham so may try and time it to make the next.
