Review

This review is disgracefully overdue because I took this tutorial back in September. However, that does not reduce it’s relevance.

This is a tutorial, teach in, one to one training, whatever you might call it carried out by Paul Bell aka Paul Voodini, aka The Magic Wand.

For those of you who have not seen Paul perform he is a highly accomplished Paranormal entertainer as well as being a well established magician. He has gradually been expanding the paranormal work and is a mainstay of the Fright Night events. Paul has published two superb books, The Paranormal Entertainer and Reader of Minds and his tutorial is built around these books and embellished with his own extensive experiences.

The tutorial can be taken in your own home, Paul is very flexible about arrangements but you need to be able to put aside 4 or 5 hours of quiet time to spend with him as he works through the programme.

For me this was a comprehensive training session from which I was able to put on two “Spook Night” shows for Halloween which went exactly as Paul had predicted they would – very smoothly.

If you are looking for new magic tricks, ideas for gadgets to impress, stunts or anything like this - forget it. This is a lesson in presentation, self belief and audience control. Because any performance of this type relies heavily on the presenter’s personal performance the best thing you can bring to this is a willingness to learn and some self confidence, Paul will instil any gaps in your confidence.

Working through his books with Paul you will touch on all aspects of this type of performance including mind reading, cold reading, palmistry, ESP, and glass moving plus a host of other things. Paul covers everything you will need for just about any kind of event and the books contain a fully scripted séance.

Paul even brings with him his own table for glass moving. I saw this table in operation at a Fright Night event at Oxford Castle just over a year ago. I was amazed by the spectacle of the glass moving and had a strong wish to know just what sort of gimmick the table was. Well, now I know and the answer is absolutely amazing.

If you have any aspiration to turn to this genre of entertainment you could do no better than take this training session. The price includes Pauls travel and the two books which are packed with his thoughts, ideas, tips and anecdotes.

As I say, using this session and working with Pauls books I turned a planned magic with some psychic stuff night in to a psychic show with only a small smell of magic (well I am not that good yet that I can dispense with all of my comfort props and you can build up a heck of a good mind reading set with an ID!!).

Overall

Value for money - 10/10
Style and content - 10/10
(and I don’t do 10/10 normally!)

I can second this I took this about a year ago and I've not looked back since. Worth the money and Paul is a true gent.

Considering the price tag includes travel and books, not to mention several hours of Paul's personal tuition in your own home, it sounds like the tutorial is priced a tad on the low side. I could be wrong, but I seem to recall SugarPuff also took this course a while back.

 I don't think he'll come to my house for that price

I will however give most everything Paul has put out a huge thumb's up and I don't do that for everyone. Paul's philosophy holds a comfortable balance between how things are within traditional (old school) Mentalism and the commercial aspects of the "new school" element.

Yeah I was the guinea pig on this one, and I've always said it was way underpriced as you basically have an entire act after the session, if you have the balls to go and do it.

Paul is just so adorable, patient and encouraging. And anyone wanting to get as close to creating real magic as you can get, id recommend this.

As a side note however, I also found following this up with going to see Paul perform (Oxford - yes yes yes haha), really makes you appreciate what he has created. Watching the audience really gives those words in the book (The Paranormal Entertainer) such power. Its a cliché but you do need to see it to truly believe what he does. I wished I lived closer as I'd visit more, he really is top chap.

I want to book his reader of minds course at some point, maybe a few of us should club together??

Thanks for the kind words Johnny (and others). I may need to pop the price up just a touch - to around £120 rather than £100, purely to cover travelling expenses. Always happy to discuss requirements for individuals or clubs/societies etc.

My psychic abilities are telling me that the above post is, as we mystics say, "dodgy".

On a more positive note, I will soon be announcing a date for a readers workshop at the lovely Treadwells. Probably in April. :D
