Yes, this is a forum of magicians. We know how the scams work.

Well two posters in this thread admitted to getting scammed this way. So clearly not everyone is as knowledgeable as you in this matter.

School for Scoundrels, Whit Haydn and Chef Anton's company have very nice and thorough DVDs on the three shell game, fast and loose and three cards monty. A lot more to it than it seems.

Currently reading White Magic by Jasper Maskelyne. I'm up to a wonderful tale of the card sharp Bianco. He purchased 30, 000 packs of cards in Spain. Marked them in a complicated way only detectable to himself. Then sold them dirt cheap in Havana. The clubs were unable to resist the cheap good quality cards. Over the next year he developed his system for reading them easily, while flooding the market with his home marked decks. He then made his fortune gambling in all the casinos using his cards. Now that is a hustle.

That is a genius idea, now how to become a Bicycle wholeseller and sell to casinos in Torbay...
Anyway I thought you could run a great scam using the Wonderlock, £1 a go win a tenner and you can check the lock and open it yourself easy money.

another thing you should be careful of is the pickpockets that work as part of the teams as well. So is not even safe to stand by knowing its a scam and knowing not to put money down :(

When I do this, I write down how much people would lose and win on a piece of paper (nice tip from a police-officer clued up on 3 card-monte, he'd go round showing people how it was a scam).

I do wonder though, if it weren't for stooges, and truly a 1-man-gang on the monte game, just doing the overhand method, and if they picked the right card, they would get the money, would that be legal?

Another person who explains (ie exposes secrets for cash) how to do this is Sal Piacente (http://www.salthehitman.com/Wanted.html)

Buy his DVDs or lecture notes.

In the words of Thomas Tusser: A fool and his money ...

AFAIK, the problem's not just that they're being scammed out of money, but that there are strict laws on where and when gambling is permitted...

That said, I'm not an expert on the monte, but couldn't a mexican turnover (is that completely the wrong name?) be used there?

Almost, in the classic scam the cards are bent in the middle. I learned off the Darryl tape a move which one handed allows you to turn over the tabled card whilst switching it for another one. Same result as a Mexican Turnover but one handed with bent cards. Can't remember off the top of my head then name of the move I'm afraid though.

There is no way for a 'mark' could pick the correct card. Even if they did, they can't. And if on the odd chance they do, then they are up against a horrible Monte. Done correctly there is no way of winning.

It's not covered by gambling laws because it's not gambling. It's covered by bunco laws.

I have known wicked people in my time who have done this in the street. Alas I have been far too saintly to overly associate with them too much. I still remember two of them showing up at a Randy Wakeman lecture years ago at the Magic Circle to my great astonishment. I doubt very much that anyone knew who they were or what they were doing there except me. I expect I was the only one that knew them. They looked rather out of place there I must say. They were pleasant enough to me and remembered me from the old days. It was not at the Circle headquarters itself but at a more public venue so I suppose that is how they gained entry.

What magicians don't realise about the game is that the operators WANT it to have a bad name! They WANT you to think it is a scam. They want to sucker in the big mouths who think they know how it is done! The "ricks" (confederates to those of you who are not wise in the ways of the world) will hone in those eager beavers who are suspicious of the game and whisper to them conspiratorially, "It is all a scam". They will lose money (it is fiction that confederates win money to encourage people) and curse the operator under their breaths and whisper to potential mugs, "The b***** switched the cards. Did you see that? It's all a con" It is all designed to gain the confidence of the potential punter and induce him to think that he knows what the con is. And then he spends his money.

There is far more to it than this brief description but that is the core of it. Incidentally they bend the cards in a different way than magicians do. Instead of the usual lengthwise crimp they do it in an S shape. It works well.
