Hi,

I've seen many magicians do some kind of variation of this effect but i just can't find any information about it. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

His name's Dan White and he tells you to check him out on Twitter...Why not drop him a line and ask him?

But that would make sense.

I don't have a twitter account, and since i've seen this effect performed many times i thought someone here could help me. By the way, thank you for that helpful and useful comment bmat, keep it up.

It's pretty much a self working trick.
The only number that is of any importance is the first number.
The trick is to get the spec's 2 halves to the top and bottom of the deck.
You start with one half already on the bottom and the other one is 4th from the top. When the first spec chooses number 3, this is ideal, as when the top 3 cards are cut off and placed in the middle, the other half is now on top, with the other half still on the bottom. I'm sure the guy will have a contingency plan for when the spec's initial number is not 3.
The top half is removed and placed in the pocket, whilst the other half remains on the bottom, so all the other numbers, cutting, splitting, etc is irrelevant.

Thanks moonbeam, that was really good explaining! It makes sense.

About the first number he said to her: "can you think of a number for me? Since we have 8 pieces...".
So i think he subtlety limited her choices from 1 to 8 and now i wonder, what kind of contingency methods are used for the other numbers? Any ideas?

Thanks a lot.

I've had a play around using 8 playing cards and turning 2 aces face up and placing them 4th from top and at the bottom. For ease, I'll refer to the 2 halves as the 2 aces.
The trick is just to keep tabs on where the aces are.
They start 4th from top and 8th from top (bottom).
The thing is, the spec doesn't know what you're going to do with the cards until they choose a number, so they choose a card and then you tell them what to do.
If the spec chooses 1 or 8, you could simply say that you want a number between 1 and 8.
If they choose 3, do as per the video.
If they choose 4, tell them to count the cards one at a time from the top into a pile on the table, then to pick these up and place them back on top. You're done - one ace on top and one ace on bottom, which is what you're trying to achieve.
If they choose 5, tell them to count the cards from the top into 2 piles. One pile will have 2 cards in, the other will have 3. The pile with 2 cards in will have the ace on top - tell them to pick up the pile with 3 cards first, then pick the pile up with 2 cards in and put that on top and to put all of this on top of the other cards - you're done, ace on top and bottom.
If they choose 6, tell them to count 3 piles of 2, noting which pile has the ace in and make sure they put that pile on top.
I haven't really come up with anything for 2 or 7 ...... crack on lol :)

Very nice thinking, thank you so much. That definitely points me in the right way to think on my own method. Moonbeam, you rock! Wish you all the best.

I'm at work - the video didn't play properly for me so I ended up scanning through it without sound. But the effect looks very similar to an effect in Woody Aragon's "A Book in English", so maybe you could get hold of that and check it out. Woody is a great creator/thinker and so it's a very worthwhile investment.

By the way - welcome to TM. Can I recommend popping over to the Introductions forum and introducing yourself to us all? Let us know your interests in magic, what you do etc.

Ian
