Truly sad news! Unfortunatly I never have had the pleasure of getting to know you, Allen but have often browsed your many interesting and informative posts and writings here with interest. Talk Magic and the magic world as a whole will, without doubt be a lesser place without you in it.

Allen is a wonderful and helpful magician. Over the years he has been so supportive and kind. He will be sorely missed. May all his wisdom be added to the akashic records so we may one day access them.

A very sad day.

Dr Todd

Truly saddened you've helped so many on here. There are few who have given so much, so selflessly. You will be missed massively.

This is very sad news indeed.

It's one thing to spend your life acquiring knowledge, but to take the time to pass on your passion and experience to generations of others is something special. I'm not just talking about magicians, but also all the students you taught over the years. Thank you for all you've done; we will miss your insight and wisdom.

I spoke to Allen this morning (Monday morning) and he was in no pain at all and sounded bright as ever!

It is his birthday at the end of the month and I plan to print every message here and give to Allen in a card

Thanks to everyone for making this a beautiful thread

I never got to know Allen (my loss), but still feel deeply saddened by this news.

His posting here and the respect that he has among other magicians show that he is someone who should be held in the highest esteem and is an example to us all.

The world will be a smaller place...

You know, sometimes doctors get it wrong. And even when they don't there is sometimes a remarkable recovery which cannot be explained by science. There is always a faint chance of this happening.

In any event I can vouch for Allen's kindness to me personally when he sent me my original manuscript for the Letter routine which I had lost years ago. At any rate all I can say with regard to the present situation is to quote the serenity prayer thus:

"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change
The courage to change the things I can
And the wisdom to know the difference"

I have always thought the key phrase was "the wisdom to know the difference"

Another more light hearted way of saying the same thing is:

"For every ailment under the sun
There is a remedy or there is none
If there be one try to find it
If there be none never mind it!"

It's been quite a while since I last posted here on TM but I'm thankful to Mandrake for passing on this very sad news via email, and thereby giving me the opportunity to post a few words.

I've never had the pleasure of meeting Allen but have on many occasions shared a post or two with him. It was apparent in the early days of reading Allen's contributions that he was one of the gentlemen of magic who possessed a wealth of knowledge and wisdom that he was willing to share for the benefit of us all. Allen shared his passion for performance with those, including myself who would take the time to read his words and then try our best to put those words into practice.

The magic community is a better place because of people like Allen, but is a sadder place when we lose a friend and colleague of Allen's stature. Unfortunately in this day an age it is not common to come across someone who is both universally respected and admired, but in Allen we had all of this and it was a pleasure to have shared some time with him, albeit online.

A fitting tribute to Allen would be to put into practice the wisdom of magic that he will leave behind and become a better magician through it. I sincerely thank you.
