Magic for Beginners. Pena Coin

Tricks for Beginners.

Pena Coin
3.95 from www.eMagicTricks.Co.Uk
http://www.emagictricks.co.uk/product_i ... ts_id=3902

(Special thanks to Magicdiscoman for recommending this one to me)

The Effect.
A rubber sheet is stretched over a glass tumbler – held in place by an elastic band. On top of the sheet are placed two coins. Any two coins can be used – although it probably works best with one silver and one copper.

The spectator is asked to choose a coin and then the magician proceeds to push one of the coins through the rubber sheet. The coin can be seen and heard falling into the glass. The rubber sheet is still in tact.

Review.
I found this trick extremely effective, in fact when I first practiced it by myself I was amazed – and I knew how it was done. (This probably says more about me than it does the trick though  ).

A little care is needed when setting it up but once it has been done a few times there is no problem.

Everyone has their own ideas on how it is done, and so far no one that I have shown it to has sussed it out. Some of the ideas though are quite incredible – and to be honest if I could do it the way some people suggest then I would be extremely talented indeed. So although it is very easy to perform – it makes you look very skilful.

The objects are 100% examinable afterwards, and there are no issues with angles.

Difficulty.
1/5
Very easy indeed.

Rating.
As a novice I would give this a rating of 9/10, it’s great seeing everyone looking on with their mouth wide open in astonishment.

Bottom Line.
It does require a little setting (Maybe a minute) up and so can’t be done just on the spur of the moment, but it is so amazing it makes it worth while. It's a trick that I will carry around with me for sure. It also possible to buy replacement sheets for the effect (which is quite useful).

Easy, cheap and effective. What more could I ask from a trick.

Good review!

As for setting up, if you're ever in a position to buy the improved Gozinta handling, there are tips and hints that allow a much easier set-up, and even show more effects - like Coin Penetrating Ballon, or even using a steel nail instead of a coin.

This trick is a very old classic, and although I don't really use it much now, I remember it being a reasonably easy impromtu trick when table-hopping.

If you incorporate basic sleights, you can even borrow a coin... although you will need at least two pre-prepared sheets to pull this off!

Seige - Just out of interest I went out for a meal with friends last weekend, and performed this in the restaurant. I made an excuse about needing to borrow an elastic band from the bar - and set it up there. It went down very well indeed.

So thanks for the suggestion.

The actual method described in the Gozinta booklet describes the use of a gimmick to re-set the trick very easily and quickly.

It is small, widely availably and can be kept in your pocket.

PM me if you want the know-how...

Ok just got this and after an initial struggle ( thanks Seige ) with set up, finally got it and boy I was impressed. When I first saw it and read the instructions, I thought it was never going to work convincingly. But it is amazing.

My rubber is black and I can't see what difference the colour makes. After succeeding with the provided latex I raided the kitchen cupboard and found some more which was white, worked just as well, though not quite as durable as the provided latex, which by the way I have not torn yet after about 6 performances ( smug look )

Bananafish, why are 2 coins used? I've only used one and I missing something ( smug look gone replaced wth slightly confused look ) :?

Your best bet for pena coin is to use 10p pieces as i found that 2p's were to sharp of an edge

I agree 100%. This is a great trick for beginners. Its visually amazing and set up is quick.

I would give it about the same rating as bananafish.

Bananafish, why are 2 coins used? I've only used one and I missing something

You set one coin up as specified (the 10p), and you slide the second coin (2p) underneath slightly. This really enhances the initial look.

You then ask the spectator which coin they want. If they choose the 2p, you just take it off and hand it to them. If they choose the 10p, you say "well thats the one we'll use then", and take off the 2p.

Either way you have enforced the impression that both coins are removable. Believe me that, and the fact that the two coins are both on top and the 2p is actaully underneath the 10p really make a big difference.

you can also use the second coin to tap the fisrt one through: "Which one do you want to use?"

Right thanks for that guys.

What I've also found really works very well and in fact according to the last person I did it on, is twice as powerful, is letting them actually push the coin through.

Did the trick the regular way with my brother where I pushed it through and he was impressed, then I did it again with him doing the push and he was totally blown away as it blew all his therories on how it was done.

definitely, using their finger to push it through is a great idea. I'm not so sure that I would do it more than onec though for the same people...

I like Nicks idea of pushing it through with the second coin, as this makes the magicians choice force a little stronger. I'll have to try that.

Did it twice with one person and got away with it, though I agree you need to be careful. Before I even let them do it I train them on the back of my hand :)

I have spent so long trying to be a technical card shark I have missed the boat on these little tricks.
I have been doing it for friends lately and without fail I get at least one comment about it being the best trick they have seen!
Am I the worlds worst card magician or have I missed a very productive boat? lol
Anyway I would say you can't buy more reaction for 4 pounds, apart from maybe a deck of bikes.
If anybody can prove me wrong on that I'm happy to spend some money on an easy WOW ;)
I can hear the wallet crying from here.

Nope I'm with you BaBaBoom,

Getting great reactions and quite a number of comments about it being the best trick they have ever seen.

I had been kinda giving the coin a sharp prod with my finger, or teaching them to. However I've found that by placing my finger on the coin and giving a very gentle push, it kinda does it in slow motion. In fact in one case you could actually see the coin part way under the rubber. Even I was blown away. LOL.

Best £4 I have ever spent on any magic trick.

Going off to practise the slow motion version

i bought this trick after seeing all the fuss it had alredy caused on the fourm so decided to give it ago. At first i was dissapointed because - EEK! Too much info, edited by mods - , untill i got the help of my bro who gave the extra set of hands i needed to set the trick up so beacue of this i cart always do set it up stood at the bar although i did discover that the coin can be set then left for ages lieing around in the bottom of my poket waiting for an empty glass. and i think the idea of a second coin makes the whole trick more presentabel and less "fishy" to the audience.
