Tricks for Beginners.

Colour Deception. Brass
19.99 from www.MagicTricks.Co.Uk
http://www.magictricks.co.uk/prodshow.asp?code=86

The Effect.
Two brass Poker chips are shown. A black one in one hand and a white one in the other hand. The spectators are asked to keep track of the where the chips are.

The magician then gives his hands a little shake, and lo and behold they have swapped places. Another little shake and they are back again. This is repeated a few times – usually, until the spectator claims you are just turning the chips over and that they are both white on one side – and black on the other side. Sure enough you turn them over and that’s exactly what they are.

You then give the chips a little rub together – and the black one miraculously turns blue. You repeat the rubbing and the white chip turns yellow.

So now you are holding a yellow and blue chip. You ask the audience which one they think has the black on the reverse side and which one has the white. Either way they are going to be wrong because when you turn the chips over they are in fact green and red on the reverse sides.

The chips can then be handed out for examination.

Review.
I really love this trick. I like it when the audience think they have caught you
out, only to be proved well and truly wrong.

It’s very well made and very slick. When the chips originally change colour it’s happening right in front of their eyes, and as if this wasn’t enough the astonishment on their faces when the chips are turned over at the end is really satisfying.

I also would rate it up because the chips really are 100% examinable afterwards, this I believe adds so much more credibility to the trick.

It does require to be reset – but this can be done very easily and very quickly. It also comes in a nice presentation box, so it can be reset and ready to go in the box.

Difficulty.
2/5. Relatively easy.

Rating.
I have to give this 10/10 as to be honest I can’t think of anyway it could be improved. It feels good. It looks good, and by golly it is good (IMHO).

Bottom Line.
This is small enough to carry around, and would be impressive to all ages of spectator. It’s not as cheap as some effects – but it won’t break the bank and you feel you are getting something quite substantial.

Especially nice if you like brass magic.

I recommend that you have a look at the videos of it being performed. (They are not the same videos).

Thanks for the review - strangely enough, I bought this routine a couple of years ago from a souvenir shop in Newquay and I believe it cost me £2.00 or thereabouts as they were selling a lot of stuff off at the end of the season. In fact I bought quite a bit of stuff at £2.00 a throw!

I had great difficulty in ‘arranging’ the chips to show the black & white faces but finally figured out that another item with a greater force (if you have Colour Deception you know what I mean!) was the only way to do it. I used it a couple of times but wasn’t all that impressed so it’s been gathering dust at the back of the drawer somewhere.

However, having seen the 2 vids I can see how that simple routine works when done properly. How many times have we read (and said) ‘It’s all in the presentation’? Thanks for rekindling the interest, guess what I’ll be rehearsing later tonight?!!

Cheers!

:P

£2? wow. That was a bargain and a half. I've actually seen it sold for as much as £29.

I agree with what you said about how helpful the vids were, I think it's always useful to see a trick performed before buying it. I also thought it was interesting that the basic methods in both videos were so different.

It highlights the fact that there are always many ways of performing the same trick, and that we should be adapting to fit our own personalised styles.

On the topic of those cheapo tricks I bought, as the weekend got well & truly scuppered by the antics of others, I only managed to sort through them last night. Apart from TT, Colour Deception (actually called ‘Magic Colours’) and Pen Thru, there was the little felt bag which sorted marbles and a sponge ball/square routine.

The thing that fascinated me was that they were all released under the banner, ‘The Magic Club of Great Britain’, with instructions in English and French and are recommended by the Societe Francasie de Prestidigitation (I bet you never knew I could type in foreign!). In fact all the tricks bear French titles only except Magic Colours which is in English. The items were made by O.I.D Magic of Woburn, Beds. (and Biot in France) and a swift Google search shows The Magic Club of Great Britain as a new-ish site which is still partly under construction and which charges an annual fee to get discount magic. A search for O.I.D. shows the range is now handled by Jester in Leeds – and Magic Colours is still there @ £9.95!

Having peeled off the layers of price tickets, I see that my version started at £8.50, then down to £3.99 then to £2.00.

Just thought you’d like to know so you can all sleep soundly tonight!
