Weird

Postby Happy Toad » Nov 13th, '03, 13:00

Ok I just got delivery of a few new tricks, actually all aimed at children. Anyhow I thought I'd practise on my partner.

Now the trick was the colouring book in conjuction with the disappearing crayons. Cos it is such an easy trick I figured I didn't need to practise on my own but would just do it first time in front of my partner.

Anyhow I did it and the weird thing was the reaction I got. I thought she might smile and say something like, oh that's pretty good the kids will like that. Now that wouldn't have been weird. Instead she was freaked and said it was the most powerful magic she had seen me do. Don't forget this is the colouring book and disappearing crayons.

Personally I'm not sure what to make of this :?

okey dokey were to begin, well first off as you expected her to go ok good for kids you probably presented it in a no big deal fasion, psycologicaly this is very appealing.
secondly to you its just a vanish and reapear but to your audience its a transposition of colour, again psycologicaly speeking transference, which we use all the time ie emotions called empathy is a strong motivater.
thirdly your useing out of the ordinary objects to do magical things, just think a bout this one for a minuet how often do you come across crayons and a colouring book in your daily routine.

i get the same response from my stamp book which is a three way version ie blank to printed, to stamped.
also the same shock from the haunted key, its because the magic is unexpected and therfore is engageing to the brain, think lockness monster, or ufo sightings.

I've also shown the 'magic colouring book' to a few people and always get that 'dropped jaw' response.

I think sometimes it's great to do something with an object that people are really familar with... they have grown up knowing and understanding... and then do something with it which they have never even thought about doing.. that's when you get the real wow factor! ..... with the 'colouring book' everyone knows how it works, you get some crayons and spend hours filling in the outlines..... every colouring book is the same.... so when you do something different... a little bit of your memory goes 'No, that's not right..... that can't happen' and then you get that reaction!

similar to the disappearing card case... everyone has handled a pack of cards, they know what they are made up of, what they feel like, how solid and real they are.... and then you come along and make them vanish .... a little bit of your memory goes 'No, that's not right..... that can't happen'

this often works better than some of the great card effects (eg NFW) because even though they produce an awesome reaction... I think people are expecting 'magic' to happen....

I hope this makes sense

Cheers

I had the same sort reaction from my better half with the ID. The deck was right there under her nose all the time, she did the shuffling, selecting and turning over in her imaginary deck and then I just showed here that the same card was reversed in the 'real deck. Instead of astonishment and a bit of praise, she said it was just plain scary. She knew it must be a trick but how could I have known, how could I have turned the card over before she'd even become involved etc. Great effect and I still haven't told her how I did it but I'm wondering if sometimes the effects we do are a bit scary like that rather than just for fun. Perhaps it's the way I do 'em!
