Mikame Card Case

Postby John McDonald » Feb 7th, '04, 13:22

There is a video of this effect at http://www.jbtv.co.uk
Search for Card Case Mikame in their catalogue

The Effect
Have a card selected from the EXAMINED deck. Put the card back into the deck and shuffle it. Now cut the deck in half and put 1/2 the deck inside the wooden card case. The spector looks through the half for their selected card, but it's not there. So you shake the card case until ONE card comes through the slot. Yes it's their Selected Card. NO Double Cards. NO Gimmick Cards of Any Kind. Completely Examinable
Cost £27.60 (Registered post) from http://www.jbtv.co.uk/home.asp
Difficulty 2
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)
Review
This is a great trick which is beautifully made as all Mikame craft tricks are. It is almost self working but only requires a little bit of practice to make the trick work. Without giving too much away you do need to practice how many cards you put back in the card box, getting the judgement right is what needs the practice but it is easy to master. The box is examinable but the reset is not instant which limits the practicality of it for table hoppers. Does require the magician to get the spectator to select a particular card "magically" if you know what I mean.....
Overall
Although not an instant reset it could work very well in a close up setting. Some practice is required to get the right amount of cards into the deck to make it work smoothly but this is easy to learn and will not take long to master. It took me about a week to get the handling and routine to work smoothly. There are lots of other good ways to reveal a chosen card however I Like this one because it does seem impossible that the chosen card comes out of the card case when the card case contains half of the deck. It has lots of scope for adapting with other routines and becoming the climax to an ambitious card routine which I am working on

The price sounds pretty good for a mikame effect as well, these are usually quite pricy due to the skilled workmanship involved.

The price is indeed great and according to http://www.bargainmagic.co.uk/
Mark Mason's JB Magic are the cheapest suppliers in the UK.

I never understood the 'trick' in this trick.

Don't know why,

You hit the nail on the head with your comments Lewis.Hence why I am working on a routine for a finale for an ambitious card routine. The card even "escapes" the box. Other presentation are possible only limited by our imaginations...
