In A Flash - Jay Sankey

Postby Jordan C » Feb 12th, '04, 17:51

The Effect

A card is chosen by a spectator and then cut into the middle of the deck where it is lost. A coin is introduced and inspected and is then wrapped in a small piece of tissue paper. The cards are given one final cut and the wrapped coin is placed on top of the deck of cards. Using a "Magical" lighter you ignite the tissue paper which disintegrates 'In a Flash'. When the eyes refocus it seems the coin has burnt thru the deck of cards. The cards are removed to reveal a hole burnt through the centre of them while the coin rests on the remainder. The coin is taken off the top card and the top card is turned over..... it is the spectators chosen card!!!

Review

This is my second favourite trick that I acquired for christmas (my favourite is Paperclipped, check out my review).

Can you hold a pinkie break? Then you can perform this effect. It is very simple to perform, the first cut puts the card exactly where you want it. The misdirection from revealing the secret comes in folding the tissue round the coin and getting your spectator to hold the coin parcel. This allows you to cut the deck again take the parcel back and place in situ before placing the cards back on the table.

That's it then, all that remains for you to do is to be theatrical, concoct a story, even get the spectator to ignite the paper at the corner. whichever way you choose to get the paper ignited once it has been lit and the glare of light has faded there will be an intake of breath as they realise that the coin has burnt thru the cards right in front of their very eyes.

Overall

10 out of 10 and deservedly so. This is strong visual magic with a nice application for flash paper. The premise of this effect has got me thinking of other ways to utilise it. I like it, I use it a lot and my only gripe is that for a trick entitled In A Flash you get no Flash paper included. You MUST buy flash paper SEPARATELY.

The instructions are clear and concise as is the packaging. A sealy bag not much bigger than the pack of cards contains the instructions on folded A4 paper and the gimmicked deck itself.
