Ulitmate monte or penguin monte
So I got one of these free sets of Penguin Monte cards in my last order. I had figured out the gaff when I watched the demo, but most laymen wouldn't ever figure it out, especially once you've cleaned up the cards in the end.
I was somewhat amused by the footrubbing in the explanation video. You guys who have the video know what I mean! I learned the routine pretty quickly; it's fairly simple and I think this would be a great trick for beginners.
I do the trick quite a bit differently from Oz's routine. I do it more like a regular Monte routine in that I lay the cards down and switch them all about. I do the trick in 3 phases, but in the first phase I let them get it right. Then the second phase of my routine is like Oz's first phase. Then the 3rd phase of mine is like Oz's second phase. At that point, if they want another try, I'll pull Oz's 3rd phase on them. It really depends on the spectators whether or not I'll do Oz's 3rd phase. I think Oz's 3rd phase makes it too obvious how it's done which is why I don't often use it.
I like to tell them that I'll give them $10 if they beat me at 3 Card Monte. I explain what the game is if they don't know, and then I get out the cards from the deck. I then get out an envelope and put a $10 bill in it and set it aside. I tell them that I'll do the game 3 times and if they get it right at least 2 out of the 3 times they'll win the $10.
In the first phase, I mix up all the cards but don't do any of the funny Monte stuff, so they get it right. I tell them that now they only have to get one more and they'll win. The next phase, I of course pull the funny stuff and they get it wrong. They're usually totally shocked, unable to believe the right card slipped out of sight. I reassure them that they still have one more chance to win, and that I'll make it even easier for them by only using 2 cards.
I set the Ace aside and then the 2 aside. I use the 3 and switch it around with the Ace, ending with the 3 under the Ace. When I ask them where the Ace is they always say the top. When I turn over the cards and show the 3 on the bottom, they're always really excited. I tell them, "hey you got me... wait"! Then I pull back the 3 to show it's the 2, and turn over the last card to show it's the Ace.
The spectator is at this point rather pi**ed and annoyed. I try to help clear their disappointment by telling them that even though they lost, I'll still let them have the envelope. When they grab the envelope and look inside, it's totally empty. This is my own idea for this trick and feel free to use it, but just beware, they will be even more mad!
I then clean up the cards so that they can be handed out for inspection or, sometimes what I like to do is use the clean cards to challenge them to hustle me. They're unable to do it of course.
This is the only trick that I perform that makes the spec feel kind of dumb and because of that nature of the trick, I reserve it only for hecklers.
Overall, I give this a 4 out of 5 stars. because you dont end clean with the original method, enless you use my method of ending it or have your own. my way though is clean and natural, and very funny ending.
